<p>Lonscale Fell is a hill in the English Lake District. Its pointed second top is instantly recognisable, standing at the eastern end of the Skiddaw massif. The fell is easily climbed from Keswick or from Skiddaw House to the north. Although now primarily a sheep pasture, it once saw considerable mining activity beneath the long eastern wall of crag.</p><br>
<h2>Topography</h2><br>
<p>The long south east ridge of Skiddaw descends over Little Man and Jenkin Hill to the depression of Flag Pots. Beyond this is the final upthrust of Lonscale Fell before the craggy descent to the Glenderaterra Beck,</p><br>
<p>The southern flanks fall gently over acres of sheep pasture in the manner of the Skiddaw range. At the base of the slope is the wooded valley of Whit Beck, separating Lonscale Fell from the east ridge of Latrigg. Here also is Lonscale, the farm which has given its name to the fell. Whit Beck is a tributary of the Glenderaterra, a stream which forms the eastern boundary of Lonscale Fell. This flows due south from Skiddaw Forest between the Skiddaw massif and Blencathra, before joining the River Greta and running on through Keswick. The eastern face of the fell above the Glenderaterra is a mile long scarp of crags, a singular feature in the Skiddaw range.</p><br>
<p>To the north of the fell is Skiddaw Forest. Confusingly this forest contains no trees, &mdash;other than the windbreak of Skiddaw House &mdash; but is a marshy upland area at around 1,300 ft surrounded on all sides by higher fells. Three streams flow from Skiddaw Forest, dividing the Northern Fells into three sectors. Dash Beck runs north west, the River Caldew north east and the River Glenderaterra south. The single building in Skiddaw Forest is Skiddaw House, which has variously seen service as a shepherds&#39; bothy and a Youth Hostel.</p><br>
<p>The northern boundary of Lonscale Fell is Salehow Beck, a tributary of the River Caldew, its waters bound for the Solway Firth by way of Carlisle. Beyond the river is Great Calva, the first of the Back o&#39;Skiddaw fells. The feeders of Salehow Beck and Whit Beck flow from the col of Flag Pots, completing the western boundary.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>In common with much of the Northern Fells the Kirk Stile Formation of the Skiddaw Group predominates. This is composed of laminated mudstone and siltstone with greywacke sandstone and is of Ordovician age.</p><br>
<p>The Glenderaterra valley was the scene of some mining activity in the nineteenth century. The northern workings were first named Glenderaterra Mine and later Brundholme Mine. These were driven primarily for lead, but also copper ore and baryte. The returns were never economic, the mine being abandoned in 1920. A little to the south was Blencathra Mine, worked unsuccessfully until about 1880. There are also some abandoned quarries below the eastern crags.</p><br>
<h2>Summit</h2><br>
<p>The highest point lies on a gentle dome on the western side of the fell. The prominent peaked top visible from below lies to the east at a height of 2,306 ft. This is referred to as Lonscale Pike by some guidebooks. The watershed between the Greta to the south and the Caldew to the north actually bypasses both of these tops, following the north eastern ridge of Burnt Horse over a top at 2,295 ft and then onward to Mungrisdale Common, an outlier of Blencathra.</p><br>
<p>The highest point bears a small cairn from which a fine Lakeland panorama is displayed southward. Thirlmere and Derwentwater are seen along with all of the major fell groupings. To the other points of the compass the northern fells intervene, close up but less inspiring.</p><br>
<h2>Ascents</h2><br>
<p>From Keswick, or as a labour saving alternative from the Gale Road car park behind Latrigg, a number of routes present themselves. Flag Pots can be reached from the tourist route to Skiddaw, or a direct line can be taken up the southern slopes. Another possibility is to follow the southern edge of Lonscale Crags, and the final (and longest) option is to contour right around the fell up the Glenderaterra and outflank it from behind.</p><br>
<p>From the Glenderaterra, or from Skiddaw House, the climber can make use of either the Burnt Horse Ridge, or a direct scramble up the buttress to reach Lonscale Pike.</p><br>
<p>Souther Fell is a fell in the English Lake District. It stands to the south of Mungrisdale village in the Northern Fells. It is most famous for the appearance of a "spectral army", said to have been seen marching along its crest on Midsummer&#39;s Day, 1745. No such force was in the District at the time.</p><br>
<h2>Topography</h2><br>
<p>Souther Fell is the eastern extremity of Blencathra, a continuation of the arm which runs down from the summit over Doddick Fell and Scales Fell. A smooth slope falls eastward from Scales Fell to the col of Mousthwaite Comb at 1,425 ft. The ridge then turns northeast for two miles along the summit of Souther Fell.</p><br>
<p>Mousthwaite Comb is a geographical oddity. To the north of the depression, running eastward, is the River Glenderamackin. To the south of the col, flowing westward is the same river. In the intervening time the Glenderamackin has run for six miles, surrounding Souther Fell on three sides like a moat. The Comb provides its only dryshod connection to other ground and even this is almost cut off by the tributary of Comb beck on the southern slope.</p><br>
<p>The far northern end of the ridge falls quite steeply to a bend of the Glenderamackin, across which is the village of Mungrisdale. The eastern flanks are quite smooth and towards the south have been enclosed to provide pasture land. Southernfell, Far Southernfell and Hazelhurst are the farms here. At the southern end, on the turn of the ridge, is the rockier slope of Knotts, falling toward the main Keswick to Penrith road.</p><br>
<p>The western side of the fell stands above the enclosed valley of the Upper Glenderamackin, looking across to Bannerdale Crags. Souther Fell has two principal tops and each stands above a patch of scree and rock on this face. A footbridge crosses the river just north of Mousthwaite Comb, the only reliable crossing between here and Mungrisdale village.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>

<h2>The "Spectral Army" of Souther Fell</h2><br>
<p>On the evening of Midsummers Day 1745, a line of marching troops, cavalry and even carriages was seen travelling along the summit ridge of Souther Fell. The ground over which they appeared to move was known to be too steep for such transport, but the procession continued unabated for some hours until night fell, constantly appearing at one end of the ridge and disappearing at the other.</p><br>
<p>26 sober and respected witnesses were assembled to view the proceedings and later testified on oath to what they had seen. The next day Souther Fell was climbed and not a footprint was found on the soft ground of the ridge.</p><br>
<p>One scientific explanation offered was that this was some bizarre mirage or reflection of the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie, that day exercising on the Scottish coast, while another explanation suggests that the sighting was originally misidentifying the smoke from Germanic bonfire rituals, with the story of the "Spectral Army" evolving over the years through transmission and adaptation in the popular press.</p><br>
<h2>Summit</h2><br>
<p>Souther Fell has two main tops, although a number of other bumps crown the ridge. That to the north east is the true summit, the southern top being perhaps 30 ft lower. A small cairn marks the top.</p><br>
<p>This being the last of the Northern Fells in that direction, the view across to the Pennines is uninterrupted. The Lakeland view peeps around the looming presence of Blencathra, taking in Great Gable, the Scafells, the nearer Helvellyn range and a portion of the Far Eastern Fells.</p><br>
<h2>Ascents</h2><br>
<p>From Scales on the A66 road an ascent can be made up Comb Gill to Mousthwaite Comb. From Mungrisdale Wainwright propounds a direct route across the fields behind the Mill Inn.</p><br>
<p>Leesville Lake is a reservoir in Virginia used for hydroelectric power generation in conjunction with Smith Mountain Lake as a pump storage project. It is located southeast of Roanoke, and southwest of Lynchburg.</p><br>
<p>Smaller and lower than Smith Mountain Lake, Leesville Lake covers 3,270 acre and contains 94,900 acre.ft of water at full pond. The lake is 17 mi long with around 110 mi of shoreline. The reservoir lies in a broad valley nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of rural southwestern Virginia of the Appalachian chain. Before the lake&#39;s creation, farming and logging were the primary industries.</p><br>
<h2>Power generation</h2><br>
<p>Initial proposals were made in the late 1920s to dam the Roanoke River and the Blackwater River at the Smith Mountain gorge to generate electricity. Construction of the Smith Mountain Dam began in 1960 and was completed in 1963.</p><br>
<p>The dam produces hydro-electric power mostly during hours of peak demand on the American Electric Power system. Water passes from Smith Mountain Lake through generators to Leesville Lake, producing power. In times of low demand, the generators are used as pumps to reverse the flow and return the water to Smith Mountain Lake.</p><br>
<p>This takes advantage of the more or less constant output of steam generation plants in off-peak periods. In its partnership role with Smith Mountain Lake generating power, Leesville Lake has a maximum refill rate of 1.33 ft per hour and a maximum drawdown rate of 0.46 ft per hour. Normal fluctuation consists of 2 to 3 ft on average with an absolute maximum of 10 ft, allowing Leesville Lake to avoid the drastic drawdowns of other area lakes.</p><br>
<h2>Recreation and development</h2><br>
<p>Since the 1960s, the area around Leesville Lake has remained relatively rural and remote with mostly corn, tobacco, small family farms and other agriculture. The limited early residential developments around the lake consisted largely of family farms. Since about 2004, however, residential growth has begun to expand rather quickly and lakefront homes and communities now dot the shoreline. Boat traffic on the lake remains low relative to nearby Smith Mountain Lake, Kerr Lake and Lake Gaston.</p><br>
<p>Leesville Lake is becoming a popular recreational area. Fishing is very popular, especially for striped bass. The state record striped bass was caught out of Leesville Lake in 2000. Boating, water skiing, wakeboarding, and riding personal watercraft are also common activities.</p><br>
<p>Access to Leesville Lake is primarily by way of USA Route 29, although State Route 43 and State Route 40 provide access to the north and south sides of the lake, respectively.</p><br>
<p>The Kremnica Mountains  are a volcanic mountain range in central Slovakia. They are part of the Western Carpathians and the Slovenské stredohorie Mts.</p><br>
<p>The mountain range is situated east of the town of Kremnica, which gave it its name. It is bordered by Veľká Fatra and Turiec Basin in the north, Zvolen Basin in the east, Žiar Basin and Štiavnica Mountains in the south, and Vtáčnik in the west. The highest mountain is Flochová at 1,317 m.</p><br>

<p>Snow Mountain is a mountain located in Franklin County, Maine, about 5 mi from the Canada–United States border. Snow Mtn. is flanked to the northeast by Bag Pond Mountain, and to the southeast by Round Mountain.</p><br>
<p>The north side of Snow Mountain drains into Indian Stream, then into Chain of Ponds, the North Branch of the Dead River, Flagstaff Lake, the Dead River, the Kennebec River, and into the Gulf of Maine. The southeast side of Snow Mountain drains into Little Alder Stream, then into Alder Stream, and the North Branch of the Dead River. The north side of Snow Mountain drains into Big Island Pond, then into the Kennebago River, and the Androscoggin River, which drains into Merrymeeting Bay, the estuary of the Kennebec River.</p><br>
<p>Lake Qaraoun  is an artificial lake or reservoir located in the southern region of the Beqaa Valley, Lebanon. It was created near Qaraoun village in 1959 by building a 61 m concrete-faced rockfill dam  in the middle reaches of the Litani River . The reservoir has been used for hydropower generation , domestic water supply, and for irrigation of 27,500 hectare.</p><br>
<p>The annual surface water flow in the Litani River received at Lake Qaraoun is 420 e6m3. This flow is used for generating hydroelectric power of 600 GWh at three hydroelectric power stations at Markaba, Awali and Jun with the total installed capacity of 190 MW. During the dry season, 30 e6m3 of water is diverted from Markaba power station to meet the needs of the Kassmieh irrigation project.</p><br>
<p>The lake is a habitat for some 20,000 migratory birds which visit it annually.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Note 420 million cubic meters is approximately 15 billion cubic feet or approximately 340,000 acre feet.</p><br>
<p>The upper Litani River, where the artificial lake or reservoir has been created with the dam at elevation of about 800 m, is in the inland region of the Beqaa Valley, whose elevation range generally lies between 650 -, with mountain peaks raising as high as 3,090 m.</p><br>
<p>The Litani River drains the southern end of the Beqaa Valley plains (a continuation of the Jordan Rift Valley), crossing the southern periphery of the Mount Lebanon range and discharging into the sea north of Tyre, after traversing a length of 170 km entirely in Lebanon. The hydrographical system of Lebanon consisting of 40 major streams is typecast into five regions, which includes the Litani River Basin formed by the Litani River in its eastern and southern part, with the river debouching into the sea at the southwestern end. The basin has a total catchment area of 2,120 km&sup2, which forms 20% area of the country, with about 1,600 km&sup2; intercepted at Lake Qaraoun by El Wauroun Dam for providing various benefits. The artificial lake is created across the Litani River in its middle reaches. Litani River is the longest river in Lebanon at the southern end of the Beqaa valley.</p><br>
<p>The Litani River, which lies entirely within the territory of Lebanon rises near the historic city of Baalbek (now the site hardly discernible due to high rate of water extraction in this reach for pumping and ancient city development) and flows through for 170 km before it outlets into the Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the 40 major streams in Lebanon and is the longest from the source to the Mediterranean sea.</p><br>
<p>The land on the periphery of the reservoir consists of agricultural lands on the eastern side where arable crops and olive orchards are seen. Grazing of sheep and goats is also noted. On the steep sloping western periphery of the lake there are fruit orchards and pasture land for grazing.</p><br>
<h3>Geology</h3><br>
<p>The geological formation at the dam axis and the reservoir consists of limestone, chalky marl, and alluvial deposits with semi karstic and karstic lime stones both upstream of the reservoir area and along the dam axis. Marl in the reservoir area has low permeability.</p><br>
<h3>Climate</h3><br>
<p>The climate in the catchment of the reservoir is of continental type with 90% of rainfall occurring between November and April, with January experiencing the maximum precipitation. Snowfall is experienced at elevation above 1,500 m. The rainfall incidence in the Beqaa Valley, which widely varies spatially and temporally, is an annual average of 1,500 mm in the mountainous region of the upper valley to a low of 700 mm in the south in the coastal region. However, the average annual rainfall is 800 mm in the catchment area of about 1,600 km&sup2; at the reservoir carted at the dam.</p><br>
<h3>Water resources</h3><br>
<p>According to water balance studies carried out for the Litani River, the total inflow of the river at the reservoir location has been assessed as 1,280 e6m3 per year, of which 60% is accounted towards aquifer recharge and evapotranspiration. Of the balance of 500 e6m3 per year of surface water, 80 e6m3 per year is used for various uses by pumping before the flow reaches the dam. Thus, the flow of 420 e6m3 is available at the reservoir, in an average year (35-year average flows from 1920s). However, in drought years, the flow could reach a low of 320 e6m3, as recorded in 1972–73). Based on precipitation data, the total annual flow could be as high as 320 e6m3. The average annual flow received at the reservoir is utilised through the dam created at the site and diverting it through a series of tunnels and ponds to generate 600 GWh of energy at three hydroelectric power stations (190 MW total installed capacity) located at Markaba, Awali and Jun. The planning done in the 1950s at the time of building the dam and the Qaraoun reservoir envisaged utilization of 800 m head available between the dam and the Mediterranean Sea through the three power stations. The river outlet at the end of the cascade of power plants is now 30 km to the north of its original outlet. It is also utilised for providing irrigation benefits by diverting 30 e6m3 per year of water from a channel of the Markaba power station for the Kassmieh Irrigation Project.</p><br>
<p>As result of this development the hydrological regime of the Litani River has been divided into two zones. The basin above the lake is known as the Upper Litani Basin (ULB), and that below the lake is called Litani&#39;s lower reaches.</p><br>
<h2>Reservoir</h2><br>
<p>The Qaraoun reservoir or lake created by El Wauroun Dam on the Litani River has a water spread area of 11.9 km&sup2;. It is the largest artificial lake in Lebanon, located in the southern part of the fertile Beqaa Valley, with a total capacity of about 220 e6m3 and effective storage (live storage) of 160 e6m3. The power generation is a primary benefit, which meets about 7%–10% of the power requirements in Lebanon. However, the stored waters also provide irrigation benefits with flows of 140 e6m3, as 110 million cubic metres is used in South Lebanon and 30 million cubic metres in Beqaa, while 20 e6m3 is used for domestic water supply in the Southern Lebanon. Controlled reservoir operation also provides flood-control benefits and prevention of water logging in an area of about 1,500 hectare.</p><br>
<p>During 1999–2000, the water quality of the reservoir has been investigated from 16 sampling points on the river and its tributaries, by the Ministry of Environment and the Litani River Authority as a part of an exercise to evolve management plan for the Litani River and Lake Qaroun&#39;s catchment. It has been noted that seven sewer networks drain directly into the river. Untreated sewage from the towns of Baalbek, Houch el Rafqa, Qaa er Rim, Zahle, Chtoura, Qabb Elias, Bar Elias, Joub Jannine and Qaraoun flow into the Litani River or its tributaries, apart from industrial effluents many factories related to manufacture of sugar, paper, lead, limestone crushers, agro-industries and also from poultry farms, tanneries and slaughterhouses. The pollution is noted by the high recorded values of BOD5 (79 mg/L) and nitrates (1.7 mg/L) in the Litani River.</p><br>
<p>The vegetation in the periphery of the lake consists of woodland, orchards, and low-growing scrub. During water-level variations in the lake, as the stored water is utilised for various beneficial uses, no submerged or emergent vegetation have been noticed. When the water level is at its lowest in the lake, a steppe-like land slope has been noticed with low vegetation of rocky shingle terrain where flocks of larks and lapwings are seen.</p><br>
<p>The bird life in the reservoir area is very notable, as 20,000 migratory birds of species of raptors, storks, pelicans and others species of birds have been sighted. The ferruginous duck (Aythya nyroca), pallid harrier (Circus macrourus), greater spotted eagle (Aquila clanga), eastern imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca) and sociable lapwing (Vanellus gregarius) are some of the birds which are of conservation concern, according to the 2008 IUCN Red List.</p><br>
<h2>El Qaroun Dam</h2><br>
<p>The El Wauroun Dam, built in the middle reaches of the Litani River, has created an artificial lake at (33&deg;34&prime;11.63&Prime;N latitude, 35&deg;41&prime;51.18&Prime;E longitude) with water-spread area of 1,190 hectare. It is situated about 70 km downstream of the historic city of Baalbek. The dam had been under planning since 1964. The Qaraoun village transferred a land area of 760 hectare for building the dam. The dam, which created the artificial lake or reservoir, is the largest dam built in Lebanon for multipurpose uses of hydropower generation (190 MW), irrigation of 28,500 hectare, and drinking-water supply. It is a concrete-faced rockfill dam (CFRD) of 61 m height built with crest level at elevation 801 m, with a dam length of 1,090 m, over karstic lime stone formations. The reservoir has a storage capacity of 220 e6m3 at a maximum pond elevation of 858 m.</p><br>
<p>The dam&#39;s upstream face is a concrete face of 47,000 m&sup2; area, with thickness of concrete face varying from 50 cm at the bottom to 30 cm at the top. The spillway of the dam is designed for an inflow flood discharge of 450 e6m3. The reservoir has a storage capacity of 220 e6m3 at maximum pond elevation of 858 m.</p><br>
<h2>Future developments</h2><br>
<p>The lake water is proposed to be integrated with a pumped-storage scheme planned under the "Qaraoun Lake-Marj et Taouil: Project". The plan is to utilise the water stored in this reservoir to be pumped to an upper reservoir, with a 50.6 m dam at maximum water level of 1,679 m to store water pumped from the Qaraoun Lake or reservoir) to maximize power generation during the daily lean period (off-peak hours) of power generation when load demand is low. In this mode of generation, the pumping will require 560 MW, that would result in a generation of 388 MW of power.</p><br>
<h2>Archaeology</h2><br>
<p>The archaeological site of Ain Jaouze overlooks Lake Qaraoun at the foot of Jebel Baruk on the west of the road from Chtaura to Jezzine. Jesuit archaeologist, Auguste Bergy collected flints from the surface of this site, suggested to be similar to those of later neolithic Byblos.</p><br>
<h2>Visitor attractions</h2><br>
<p>On the western periphery of the lake there are many restaurants and hotels which are popular during late spring and summer. During this time many large boats operate in the lake for lake viewing and also for fishing. In winter, when water level in the lake is high boats are operated to hunt for of birds such as wildfowl, mainly storks, heron, egrets and lark species.</p><br>
<p>The Gaula is a river located in the Sunnfjord region of Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. The 63 km long river is the central part of the Gaularvassdraget watershed basin which covers about 626 km&sup2; across the municipalities of Gaular, Sogndal, and Førde. The river is a good salmon fishing river. The river runs across the whole municipality of Gaular, and the river is the namesake of the municipality.</p><br>
<h2>Course</h2><br>
<p>The river begins as glacial runoff in the Gaularfjellet mountains and it runs through the municipalities of Førde, Gaular, and Sogndal. The glaciers that feed the river are Grovabreen, Jostefonn, and Troget, all three are located just west of the massive Jostedalsbreen glacier. The river starts up in the mountains and empties into a fjord at sea level, and so the water drops over 700 m in elevation throughout its course. This is one reason why the area is often referred to as Fosselandet (lit. "the land of waterfalls"). There are many waterfalls on the Gaular and its tributaries.</p><br>
<p>The river Gaula begins as two main branches. The northern branch begins in the mountains east of the village of Haukedalen in Førde Municipality. That branch flows to the southwest eventually into the lake Viksdalsvatnet. The southern branch begins at the lake Norddalsvatnet on the border of the municipalities of Gaular and Sogndal. It flows along the border, then south into Sogndal to the lake Nystølsvatnet. The river then turns west, back into Gaular municipality and it heads west until it empties into the lake Viksdalsvatnet. This lake is where the two branches join together. It then finishes its course by flowing westward, passing through the municipal center of Sande, before emptying into the Dalsfjorden at Osen near the village of Bygstad. The European route E39 highway crosses the river just east of the village of Sande.</p><br>

<p>Dalsfjorden is a fjord in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It is located in the municipalities of Askvoll, Fjaler, and Gaular. It is one of the two main fjords that comprise the Sunnfjord region of the county. The fjord is about 40 km long and it is generally about 0.5 to 1 km wide.</p><br>
<p>The Dalsfjorden is a narrow fjord that cuts into roughly eastwards from the village of Vilnes on the island of Atløyna in Askvoll municipality. The outer part of the fjord is also known as the Vilnesfjorden. The mouth of the fjord by Vilnes has a width of approximately 3.5 km, but at the village of Holmedal the fjord narrows quite a bit. The rest of the fjord going east has a width of 0.5 to 1 km. The mouth of the river Gaula is located at the innermost part of the fjord. On the south side of the fjord lies the village of Dale, the administrative centre of the municipality of Fjaler.</p><br>
<p>There is one ferry operated by Fjord1 Nordvestlandske travelling the Askvoll-Gjervik-Fure route on the western end of the fjord. There&#39;s a bridge connecting Dale and Askvoll, opened in December 2013.</p><br>
<p>San Bruno Creek  is an intermittent stream that rises on the eastern slopes of the Northern Santa Cruz Mountains in San Mateo County, California, USA. The headwaters descend a relatively steep canyon east of Skyline Boulevard in a tortuous course. Comparison of topographic maps from 1896 and 1939 illustrates the extreme modification in the lower reaches due to urban development from the rapidly expanding population. The San Bruno Creek watershed was originally settled by a tribe of the Ohlone, and later this locale was part of the Spanish missions&#39; landholdings.</p><br>
<p>A hiking trail winds along San Bruno Creek representing an important link in the San Francisco Bay Trail; in fact, this link is needed to make up for lack of access along a large bay front area occupied exclusively by San Francisco International Airport; thus, the Bay Trail must detour a full two miles inland from the bay to meet the San Bruno Creek Trail.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Prehistorically the banks of San Bruno Creek were settled by the Buriburi tribe of the Ohlone, who are imputed to have lived there as early as 2000 BC. One Buriburi campsite has been identified along San Bruno Creek, which may have had a population of 15 to 25 people. This watershed was first explored by Europeans in 1769 by a Spanish expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà. Later, more extensive explorations by Bruno Hecate resulted in the naming of San Bruno Creek after St. Bruno of Cologne, the founder of a medieval monastic order. This creek later gave its name to the community.</p><br>
<p>With the establishment of the San Francisco de Asís (St. Francis of Assisi) mission, much of the catchment basin became pasture for grazing mission livestock. Following the decline of the missions, the San Bruno Creek watershed became part of Rancho Buri Buri granted to José de la Cruz Sánchez, the eleventh Alcalde (mayor) of San Francisco. Dairy farms later became common in much of the area.</p><br>
<p>One of the earliest maps showing San Bruno Creek appeared in 1893, prepared by Andrew Cowper Lawson, professor of geology at the University of California, Berkeley.</p><br>
<p>At that time San Bruno Creek was drawn as sharing headwaters with another creek which drained away from the bay into what is now called Crystal Springs Reservoir. Later development of the reservoir by the city of San Francisco and lower reach urbanization by the city of San Bruno modified greatly the upper and lower reaches of the watercourse.</p><br>
<h2>Upper reach</h2><br>
<p>The upper one half mile (800 m) of San Bruno Creek is the most rugged and natural reach as the stream winds through steep canyons of about 45 degrees in slope. The underlying geological formation of this upper catchment basin is Pleistocene Colma Formation, which continues eastward in the basin under most of the San Francisco Bay Flood Plain. Principal flows of the creek are within the winter months of November to March, the only season of meaningful rainfall in the Bay Area. Groundwater in the middle to upper basin varies between about 70 to 150 feet (21 to 46 m), and flows generally eastward toward the Bay. This wooded upper reach watershed consists of a mixed oak woodland with coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia, as a dominant species. Other larger plants are the California Bay Laurel and the understory species Toyon. The understory also includes the following wildflowers: evening primrose (Renothera ovata), wild radish (Raphanus satira), wild cucumber (Marah fabaceus), scotch broom (Cytisus scoparius), miners lettuce (Montia perfoliata), fillaree (Erodium cicutarium), vetch (Vicia americana), sweet clover (Melilotus indius), lupine (Lupinus sp.), and California poppy (Eschscholzia californica).</p><br>
<p>Cagles Mill Lake, also known as Cataract Lake, is a reservoir located near Cataract, Indiana in Lieber State Recreation Area, in west central Indiana on the borders of Putnam and Owen counties. It is alimented from the north by Mill Creek and drains out through to the Eel River to its south, which then makes its way to the White River. Indiana State Road 42 once went through where Cataract Lake is now and currently has a new, entirely different route on the upper area from its original route.</p><br>
<p>Located on the lake are the states largest waterfalls, the Cataract Falls. A main attraction to tourists on the lake is a bald eagles nest, where the birds return every season.</p><br>
<p>Cagles Mill Dam is a flood control project of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, an earthen dam completed in 1953. It impounds a maximum capacity of 228,120 acre-feet, and normal storage of 27,112 acre-feet.</p><br>
<p>The Staatsburgh State Historic Site preserves a Beaux-Arts mansion designed by McKim, Mead, and White and the home&#39;s surrounding landscape in the hamlet of Staatsburg, Dutchess County, New York, United States. The historic site is located within Ogden Mills & Ruth Livingston Mills State Park. The mansion, a New York State Historic Site, is considered a fine example of the great estates built during the Gilded Age.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>In 1792, Morgan Lewis, the third Governor of New York, purchased an estate covering of about 334 acre and commissioned the construction of a colonial-style house on the site of the present day mansion. In 1832, this first house was destroyed by a fire, said to be an act of arson committed by disgruntled tenant farmers. After the fire, Morgan Lewis and his wife, Gertrude Livingston, a sister of Chancellor Robert R. Livingston, immediately replaced the structure with a Greek Revival mansion with 25 rooms. The house was inherited in 1844 by Morgan Lewiss daughter Margaret and her husband Maturin Livingston; and in 1847 by the couples son Maturin Livingston (1816–1888).</p><br>
<p>In 1890, Ruth Livingston Mills, the great-grand daughter of Morgan Lewis and the mother of Ogden L. Mills, Secretary of the Treasury, inherited the estate. Not long afterwards, Ruth Livingston Mills and her husband, the financier and philanthropist Ogden Mills, commissioned a remodeling and enlargement of the mansion to the architectural firm of McKim, Mead, and White; the principal architect was Stanford White. Work started in 1895 and when completed in the following year, he had turned the house into a Beaux-Arts mansion with 65 rooms, 14 bathrooms, and 23 fireplaces. The cost of the work is reported to have cost about $350,000. As part of the process, a coal-powered electricity plant was constructed near the Hudson River to supply the electric lights in the mansion, which was also equipped with central heating. The mansion was used as a residence and for entertaining by the family; they owned five homes in total, and stayed at Staatsburgh mainly during the fall season between mid-September and the Christmas holidays. During this time, they hosted house parties, balls, and dinners. At the remainder of the year, the family stayed in one of their other residences in New York City, Paris, Newport, Rhode Island, and California. Before her death, Ruth Livingston Mills began acquiring lands surrounding the estate. After her death in 1920, Ogden Mills continued to purchase the surrounding property, enlarging the acreage of the property to total over 1,600 acre, the size of the mansion grounds at the time that it was given to the state of New York. In 1929, the property was passed on to their son, Ogden Livingston Mills and upon his death in 1937, on to his sister Gladys Mills Phipps.</p><br>
<p>In 1938, Gladys Mills Phipps donated the house and 192 acre of land to the state of New York as a memorial to her parents. As a State Historic Site, the estate is operated by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. In 1988, the Friends of Mills Mansion were organized to support the preservation and educational work at the site.</p><br>
<h2>Design</h2><br>
<p>The outside of the mansion features a massive portico, balustrades, pilasters, and floral festoons. The central part of the mansion is layered into a basement, three floors, and an attic. In the north and south wings, there is a subbasement, a basement, and two floors. Ceilings in the older part of the building dating prior to the enlargement (the first floor of the central part) are about 14 ft high, whereas the ceilings of the later construction (first floor of the north and south wings) can be about 18 ft high. The interior of the building is decorated in French styles of the 17th and 18th century. However, some architectural elements of the previous home have been preserved in the process.</p><br>
<h2>Preservation</h2><br>
<p>The Mills Mansion poses several challenges to preservation: On the outside, a gray sprayed concrete finish which was added later as a preservation measure needs to be removed and replaced with a more suitable surface treatment. At the same time, the decorative cornice and many decorative elements need to be either restored or replaced. On the inside of the building, wall paint and furnishing fabrics are in need of replacement, marble and wooden surfaces need to be cleaned and the objects of the mansion&#39;s collection need to be conserved.</p><br>
<p>Missouri Headwaters State Park is a Montana state park that marks the official start of the Missouri River. It includes the Three Forks of the Missouri National Historic Landmark, designated in 1960 because the site is one where the Lewis and Clark Expedition camped in 1805. The park is open for day use and camping, offering hiking trails, hunting, and water-related activities. It is located on Trident Road northeast of Three Forks, Montana at an elevation of 4,045 ft.</p><br>
<h2>Setting</h2><br>
<p>The bulk of Missouri Headwaters State Park is found on a peninsula flanked on the east by the Gallatin River and the west by the Missouri River and the Madison River. Small parts of the park are also located on the east bank of the Gallatin River, and an island in the Missouri just below the confluence of the Madison and Jefferson Rivers. The total park size is 532 acre. The Jefferson River meets the Madison and Missouri roughly midway through the park&#39;s north-south extent.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Lewis and Clark Expedition encamped at the confluence site on July 26, 1805. On July 28, Meriwether Lewis wrote in his journal:</p><br>
<p>The expedition were likely the first white men to ever penetrate this landscape. Lewis and Clark were at first uncertain how to proceed, and scouted each of the branches before ultimately departing on July 30 up the Jefferson River.</p><br>
<p>As the west was explored and developed through the 19th century, the forks area was frequently used as a camp site by fur trappers. Acquisition for the state park was begun by preservation organizations in the 1960s.</p><br>
<h2>Claims of Missouri River source</h2><br>
<p>The Lewis and Clark decision not to call the Jefferson the Missouri has spurred debate over what is the longest river in North America, since the Missouri and Mississippi are nearly identical in length. The Missouri traditionally had been called the longest river in North America. However, 72 miles of it have been trimmed off in re-channeling its streambedmainly for the many hydroelectric power plants in the region so that it is now sometimes referred as second to the Mississippi in terms of length. If the Jefferson were included in the Missouri length, it would technically still be considered the longest river by experts of the United States Geological Survey.</p><br>
<p>The utmost headwaters of the Missouri are subject to debate but two commonly claimed locations ultimately drain into the Jefferson. Lewis on August 12, 1805 said he visited the headwaters on Trail Creek just above Lemhi Pass on the Continental Divide in the Beaverhead Mountains at around 8,600 feet which he described:</p><br>
<p>In 1888 Jacob V. Brower, who had championed turning the headwaters of the Mississippi River into a Minnesota state park, visited another site which today is also claimed to be the furthest point on the Missouri. Brower published his finding in 1896 in "The Missouri: Its Utmost Source."</p><br>
<p>Brower&#39;s Spring, as the site is now known, is at around 8,800 feet in the Centennial Mountains. The site is commemorated by a rock pile at the source of Hellroaring Creek which flows into Red Rock River and then into Clark Canyon Reservoir where it joins the Beaverhead then the Big Hole River before ultimately hooking up with the Jefferson.</p><br>
<p>Mount Putnam is a mountain located on the border between Washington County and Lamoille County, Vermont, in the Putnam State Forest.</p><br>
<p>Mount Putnam, the high point of the Worcester Range, is flanked to the northeast by Mount Worcester, and to the southwest by Mount Hunger.</p><br>
<p>It is the sixth most prominent peak in Vermont. The summit is in Washington County, but the mountain extends into Lamoille County as well.</p><br>
<p>Mount Putnam stands within the watershed of the Winooski River, which drains into Lake Champlain, and ultimately into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence in Canada.</p><br>
<p>The north side of Mount Putnam drains into Gold Brook, thence into the Little River and the Winooski River.</p><br>
<p>The west side of Mt. Putnam drains into Thatcher Brook, and thence into the Winooski.</p><br>
<p>The east side of Mt. Putnam drains into Minister Brook, thence into the North Branch of the Winooski River.</p><br>
<p>Montes de Málaga is a mountain range of the Penibaetic System in Málaga Province, Andalusia, Spain. Its highest point is the 1,030 m high Cresta de la Reina peak. Other notable peaks are San Antón, Coronado, Monte Victoria and Gibralfaro.</p><br>
<p>The range is named after Málaga City located at its feet.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>This mountain range extends between the Guadalhorce valley to the west and the Axarquía in the east. To the north the Corredor de Periana valley separates it from the Cordillera Antequerana and to the south lies the Mediterranean Sea.</p><br>
<p>River Guadalmedina flows through the Montes de Málaga. It is a river subject to high seasonal variations and has five well defined tributaries which have their sources in this range, the Arroyo de las Vacas, Arroyo Chaperas, Arroyo Humaina, Arroyo Hondo and Arroyo de Los Frailes. All of these rivers are dry most of the year. Located in the mountains, the Limonero Dam on the Guadalmedina provides water for the area.</p><br>
<p>Part of the area of the Montes de Málaga is a protected area under the name Montes de Málaga Natural Park located within the range.</p><br>
<p>Traveler Mountain is a mountain located in Piscataquis County, Maine, in Baxter State Park. The Traveler, is the eighth-most prominent in Maine. Subsidiary peaks include the Peak of the Ridges 3,225 ft North and South Traveler Mountain 3,144 ft and 2,677 ft, respectively.</p><br>
<p>The Traveler stands within the watershed of the Penobscot River, which drains into Penobscot Bay on the coast of Maine. The east side of the Traveler drains into the East Branch of the Penobscot River. The north and west sides of the Traveler drain by several brooks into Trout Brook, then into Grand Lake Matagamon, the source of the East Branch of the Penobscot. The south side of the Traveler drains into the Pogy Brook, then into Wassataquoik Stream and the East Branch.</p><br>
<p>The Traveler was named by loggers using the East Branch of the Penobscot River. As any distant object will appear to do, it seemed to move along with them as they went down river. Upper and Lower South Branch Ponds are at the western base of the Traveler. Three ridges descend the western slopes of the mountain and provide access to the summit. These ridges are from North to South: North Traveler Ridge, Center Ridge and Pinnacle Ridge. North Traveler Ridge of course leads to the Northern summit. The other two ridges begin near the thoroughfare between the two ponds and proceed up to the peak of the ridges 3,225 ft. Both routes then merge on the way from the Peak of the Ridges to the summit of the Traveler.</p><br>
<p>Buck Mountain 11,938 ft is located in the Teton Range, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, immediately southeast of Grand Teton. The mountain is the highest summit south of Garnet Canyon and is easily seen from most vantage points in Jackson Hole. Views from the summit offer excellent views of the Cathedral Group to the north. The west slope of the summit tower are along the Alaska Basin Trail and extend into Caribou-Targhee National Forest and the Jedediah Smith Wilderness, which is the location of Alaska Basin, a popular wilderness camping area for backpackers. Timberline Lake is located on the eastern flanks of the peak.</p><br>
<p>The summit was first climbed on August 21, 1898 by T.M. Bannon and George Buck, only ten days after Grand Teton was first climbed by another party. Bannon later became the first person to climb Borah Peak, the tallest mountain in the state of Idaho.</p><br>
<p>Albany City Hall is the seat of government of the city of Albany, New York. It houses the office of the mayor, the Common Council chamber, the city and traffic courts, as well as other city services. The current building was designed by Henry Hobson Richardson in his particular Romanesque style and opened in 1883 at 24 Eagle Street between Corning Place  and Pine Street. It is a rectangular, three-and-a-half-story building with a 202 ft tall tower at its southwest corner. The tower contains one of the only municipal carillons in the country.</p><br>
<p>Albanys first city hall was the Stadt Huys, built by the Dutch at the intersection of Broadway and Hudson Avenue probably in the 1660s, though possibly earlier. It was probably replaced around 1740 with a larger building, which continued to be known as the Stadt Huys. In 1754, the Stadt Huys was the location of the Albany Congress, where Benjamin Franklin presented the Albany Plan of Union, the first proposal to unite the British American colonies. In 1797 Albany was declared the state capital of New York and the New York Legislature made its home in Albanys city hall. In 1809 the Legislature opened the first New York State Capitol and Albany&#39;s government moved in with the Legislature. After purchasing a plot of land at the eastern terminus of Washington Avenue, across Eagle Street from the capitol, the city government moved into a new city hall designed by Philip Hooker in 1832.</p><br>
<p>In 1880, Hookers city hall was destroyed by fire and a new design was commissioned by Henry Richardson; the building opened in 1883. The new city hall still stands and is a fine example of Richardsons unique Romanesque style. Architectural critics consider the building to have been designed around the high point of Richardson&#39;s career. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 4, 1972.</p><br>
<h2>Former city halls</h2><br>
<p>Albany has had multiple buildings dedicated to being the seat of city government over its history. However, historians disagree on details of many of the earlier structures, namely, when they were built.</p><br>
<h3>Stadt Huys</h3><br>
<p>Albany&#39;s original city hall, the Stadt Huys (; Dutch for "city hall&quot sometimes written Stadt Huis) may have been built as early as 1635. Evidence from the journals of Wouter van Twiller, Director of New Netherland (1633–1638), suggests that at least some type of punitory building was built on the site during his term in office. George Howell and Jonathan Tenney, in their book Bi-centennial History of Albany, claim that reports from 1646 state the building was a substantial (at least for its time) three-story structure, with the lower floor built of stone and used as a jail. However Albany historian Cuyler Reynolds claims the Stadt Huys was not built until 1673. The Stadt Huys officially became city hall when the Dongan Charter incorporated Albany into a city in 1686. An engraving of a 1695 map of Albany clearly identifies the Stadt Huys at the northeast corner of present-day Hudson Ave and Broadway.</p><br>
<p>It is probable that a new city hall was built on the site of the Stadt Huys around 1740; historians at the New York State Museum (NYSM) claim it was 1741. Growing tired of increasingly cramped space, the city government was able to secure funds from the provincial government to construct a new city hall on the same site. This building was also commonly known as the Stadt Huys, even though it was a completely new structure and the English had been in control of New York for more than 75 years. The NYSM describes the new Stadt Huys as a three-story brick structure, adding that it was a "more substantial building" than its predecessor. This new building was the third-largest building in Albany, surpassed only by the local Dutch church (though not the one that stands today) and Fort Albany. The roof of the new structure was gabled and was topped with a cupola and belfry. Howell and Tenney claim that the original Stadt Huys was in use for at least 160 years (meaning a replacement structure would not have been needed until 1795 at the earliest), which is in disagreement with the idea that a new Stadt Huys was built in the 1740s.</p><br>
<p>In 1754, the Stadt Huys was the site of the Albany Congress; Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania presented the Albany Plan of Union there. This was the first formal proposal to unite the British American colonies. A month prior to the meeting, Franklin published his Join, or Die political cartoon, an infamous graphical representation of the Plan of Union.</p><br>
<p>During the Revolutionary War, city hall was home to the Albany Committee of Correspondence (the political arm of the local revolutionary movement), which took over operation of Albany&#39;s government in 1775 and eventually expanded its power to control all of Albany County (which at that time was the largest county in the colony, extending far past its current borders). Tories and prisoners of war were often jailed in city hall alongside common criminals. Following the war, city hall was an occasional meeting place of the newly formed New York Legislature, in addition to being home to the city and county governments, the jail, courts, and local registry.</p><br>
<p>In 1797 Albany was declared the official capital of the state and the Legislature made city hall its home until the first state capitol was opened in 1809. In an effort to move public buildings away from the bustling and expanding waterfront, the new capitol was located atop the State Street hill, on the same land the current building now stands. City surveyor Simeon De Witt, in his 1794 plan of the city, set aside this land as a public square. Also included on this map are depictions of city hall and the new city jail, located at State and Eagle Streets. In 1809, Albany city government moved with the Legislature into the new capitol and remained there until a new city hall was opened in 1832.</p><br>
<h3>1832 city hall</h3><br>
<p>In an effort to move city and county government functions out of the state capitol, the city purchased a plot of land to build on in 1832. They chose a spot on the edge of De Witts public square, along Eagle Street at the eastern terminus of Lion Street (later renamed Washington Avenue); the land was bought from St. Peters Church for $10,295.95 ($ in modern dollars). The design of the new city hall was done by Albany architect Philip Hooker. The cornerstone was laid by Mayor John Townsend amid a Masonic ceremony, however the date of this event is in dispute. The building was completed in 1832 at a cost of about $92,000 ($ in modern dollars). The new city hall was a Greek Revival structure, built of white marble with an entrance porch supported by four Doric columns. On the roof was a gilded dome. The interior was simple, with little ornamentation, though a full-length statue of Alexander Hamilton stood in the center of the upper hall, between the Court room and the Common Council Chamber. Upon one side of this hall was a bas-relief of DeWitt Clinton, with a view of a primitive canal-boat in the distance, and on the opposite wall was a similar figure of Sir Walter Scott. Plans for a replacement city hall quickly developed.</p><br>
<h2>Current city hall</h2><br>
<p>Following the 1880 fire, Henry Richardson quickly secured the commission for the replacement city hall after a limited competition between six architects and architectural firms. Richardson had been a frequent visitor to Albany over the prior four years, having been one of the lead architects on the state capitol. The budget was limited to $185,000; Richardsons design came in at $184,000. However the appointed public committee upped the price to $204,000 after granite was substituted for brownstone in the design. The new city hall design dates from the period that is typically regarded as Richardsons architectural peak.</p><br>
<p>The building is a load-bearing masonry design laid out in a rectangle, with a 202 ft tall, Venetian-style tower on its southwest corner topped with a pyramidal roof. The main structure is three-and-a-half stories tall and the front (west) face is nine bays wide. The exterior walls are rusticated Milford (Rhode Island) granite with Longmeadow (Massachusetts) brownstone trim. Save for the bold asymmetrical placement of the tower (which is a prime example of Richardson&#39;s disregard for architectural correctness and known for being one of his best tower designs), the building is noted for its general simplicity in design. The entranceway is a simple triple-arch loggia; other design elements on the front façade are limited to its windows and a quadruple-arch balcony off the Common Council chamber. The building is simultaneously noted for its general simplicity and care for small details, especially its intricate carvings. Most of the stone cutters originally brought to Albany to work on the capitol were later hired to do the sculptural details on city hall.</p><br>
<p>Many elements of the exterior design are representations of interior functionality. Because the Common Council chamber is located on the second floor (above the entrance), that story is the same height as the first-floor entrance hall. The tower is essentially window-less because it was meant to be the city archive; a round staircase extends up the southeast corner of the tower for access. The short tower on the building&#39;s southeast corner was originally meant to be the transition between city hall and the (to-be built) jail, complete with a "bridge of sighs" to transport inmates straight from their cells in the jail to the court rooms in city hall.</p><br>
<p>Due to lack of funds at the time (the buildings initial budget doubled, ending up at $325,000 ($ in modern dollars) including furnishings), Richardson devoted most of his efforts to the buildings exterior. A report from the Times Union states, "There wasnt enough money for Richardson to do the job as thoroughly as he would have liked. He said in his writing that if there wasnt sufficient money, hed rather do it right on the outside and leave it to a future generation to finish the interior. The interior was finished by city architects a good 30 years after Richardson built it." The interior was redesigned by Ogden and Gander in 1917. The mayors office is on the first floor of the tower, the Council chamber and offices are on the buildings second floor, and the city clerks office is on the second floor of the tower. The mayors office contains a painting of the citys first mayor, Pieter Schuyler.</p><br>
<p>With the leadership of William Gorham Rice in 1927, a carillon was added to the tower; it contained sixty bells (though it could produce only 47 different notes since top notes have double bells) made by John Taylor & Co in England. Financed by public donations (from upwards of 25,000 people), it cost $63,000 ($ in modern dollars) and was the first municipal carillon in the United States. In 1986 Mayor Thomas Whalen had the carillon restored, which included replacing 30 bells and adding two notes to its repertoire. The 49 bells weigh 27 ST. The largest bell is 5 ft in diameter and weighs 10,953 lb. The carillon is still in use and plays multiple concerts during the week.</p><br>
<p>The clock faces on the tower were added in the 1920s, possibly around the time the carillon was added. The 1897 image of the city hall above shows the tower without the clock faces (though the stonework shows obvious intent to have clock faces installed). City hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 4, 1972.</p><br>
<p>Castor  is a mountain in the Pennine Alps on the border between Valais, Switzerland and the Aosta Valley in Italy. It is the higher of a pair of twin peaks , the other being Pollux, named after the Gemini twins of Roman mythology. Castor&#39;s peak is at an elevation of 4,223 m, and it lies between Breithorn and the Monte Rosa. It is separated from Pollux by a pass at 3,847 m, named Passo di Verra in Italian and Zwillingsjoch in German.</p><br>
<p>Ascents are usually made from the alpine hut Capanna Quintino Sella on the Italian side, by means of the Felikjoch and the long and narrow southeast ridge. From the Swiss side, ascents start from Klein Matterhorn and go by way of the Italian glacier Grand Glacier of Verra and the mountain&#39;s west flank. The first ascent was made on August 23, 1861.</p><br>
<p>Castor and Pollux are also a pair of summits in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, USA. Located in the Absaroka Range, Castor is 3,308 m, 65 m lower than its twin.</p><br>
<h2>Image gallery</h2><br>
<p>Lake Kohangatera is one of two lakes in Fitzroy Bay . It has an open water area of 17 hectares and is fed by Gollans Stream, which has its headwaters on Mount Lowry, 14 km to the north. The drainage basin area is about 1,700 ha.</p><br>
<p>The lake&#39;s southern end extends close to the sea where it is dammed by the gravel and sand of old earthquake raised beaches. The lake itself is a protected wildlife reserve managed by DOC and no fishing is allowed there. It is also part of the East Harbour regional park (administered by the Wellington Regional Council). It has both significant historical and biological values; a large colony of black shags can be found on the northern edge of the lake and there is substantial archaeological evidence of a Māori fishing village existing there in pre-European times.</p><br>
<p>The Virginia Tillery Round Barn is a round barn located on County Route 738 west of White Hall in Greene County, Illinois. The barn was built in the fall of 1912 for farmer Harry C. Price. With a 36 ft diameter, the barn is relatively small for an Illinois round barn; the median diameter of Illinois round barns was 60 ft. Its size suggests that it served as a general-purpose barn, not a dairy barn like the state&#39;s larger round barns. Brown tile blocks were used to build the barn, which is topped by a wood shingle roof with a cupola.</p><br>
<p>The barn was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 6, 1982. It was one of several barns added as part of the Round Barns in Illinois Multiple Property Submission.</p><br>
<p>Ron George Round Barn is a round barn northeast of the USA village of Romeoville, Illinois. It was originally constructed for Frank Eaton c. 1912–13 in Bolingbrook, Illinois.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Wilbur J. Fraser, who designed most of the round barns in Illinois, encouraged his brother-in-law Frank Eaton to construct such a barn. Eaton was living in the nearby settlement of Plainfield at the time. The $1,500 building served nine horse stalls and may have served cows as well. It was named after Eaton&#39;s young grandson Ron George. Ownership of the barn was later transferred to George, who maintained the property until the 1970s.</p><br>
<p>George Round Barn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service in December 1982, four months after four other round barns joined the Register as part of the Multiple Property Submission (MPS), Round Barns in Illinois. In 1998, in an effort to prevent its demolition, the barn was dismantled and moved elsewhere in Bolingbrook. It was finally reconstructed in 2007.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The round barn in 60 ft in diameter and sits on a poured concrete foundation. The single-hip roof has wooden shingles. The central silo is elliptical and is accessed from the loft. A wooden cupola is found 60 ft above the ground. The main entrance was originally on the northwest side of the barn. The original building materials are still in use. At its original location, the barn abutted two large sheds, one to the east and one from the south. The round design was believed to be more efficient than the typical rectangular barn.</p><br>
<p>Linville Falls is a waterfall located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in the United States. The falls move in several distinct steps, beginning in a twin set of upper falls, moving down a small gorge, and culminating in a high-volume 45 ft drop. It is named for the Linville River, which goes over the falls. Linville Falls has the highest volume of any waterfall on the Northern Edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains.</p><br>

<p>Linville Falls marks the beginning of the Linville Gorge, which is formed by the Linville River, which continues on after the falls before finally ending near Lake James.</p><br>

<p>According to personnel at Linville Falls, the falls were used by local Native Americans to execute prisoners. No one is known to have survived a fall over the final plunge, except for kayaker Pat Keller in 2010. The following is from the CARNEGIE Hero Fund Commission "Charles W. Davis, 23, beekeeper, saved Hallie L. Hartman, 20, from drowning, Linville Falls, North Carolina, August 30, 1928. Miss Hartman fell into the Linville River and was carried 300 feet through swift water and dropped 30 feet over a fall into a pool in which the water was 45 feet deep and very cold. The banks of the pool were high and precipitous. Davis descended high rock ledges with difficulty to a low ledge at the pool, becoming winded. Fully clothed, he swam 40 feet through rough water to Miss Hartman, who was unconscious. Grasping her, he swam 15 feet with great exertion against a strong undercurrent that pulled toward the falls and then swam 65 feet farther to a low point at the bank. As he tried to push Miss Hartman upon the bank, he fell to his knees from fatigue but got to his feet quickly and placed Miss Hartman upon the bank. After prolonged efforts, Miss Hartman was revived."</p><br>
<p>The falls were donated to the National Park Service in 1952 by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. He provided about $100,000 for purchase of the land, including a 1,100 acre area surrounding the falls and a part of Linville Gorge, from Giulia Luginbuhl of Des Moines, IA, whose father, F. W. Hossfeld of Morganton, NC, had purchased the property about 1900.</p><br>
<p>At one time, the upper section of the main plunge was the same height as the lower section, however, flooding caused the upper section to collapse on top of the lower falls, making the lower falls a considerably longer plunge.</p><br>
<h2>Visiting the falls</h2><br>
<p>The falls is owned by the National Park Service, which operates a visitor center and several miles of non-handicapped accessible trails with 4 overlooks for the falls. The 0.5 mi Upper Falls trail leads to the top of the falls, where visitors can see the small twin upper falls and the water spiraling through a small canyon on its way to the main falls. The Erwins View trail leads to 2 overlooks, the Chimney View overlook (0.7 miles) and the Erwins View overlook (0.8 miles). The 0.5 mi Plunge Basin Trail leads to the Plunge Basin Overlook, which provides a view of the falls from the other side of the river. Finally, the 0.7 mi Gorge Trail, which branches off from the Plunge Basin trail, leads to an area near the foot of the falls. Swimming is prohibited at all areas of Linville Falls, as many deaths have occurred.</p><br>

<p>Duggers Creek Falls is located in the Linville Falls National Recreation Area. It can be reached by the short Duggers Creek Falls trail, which starts at the back right corner of the paved parking lot from the Visitor Center. The small falls can be seen on the right from a footbridge over the creek.</p><br>

<p>Lake Assad  is a reservoir on the Euphrates in Raqqa Governorate, Syria. It was created in 1974 when the Tabqa Dam was closed. Lake Assad is Syria’s largest lake with a maximum capacity of 11.7 km3 and a maximum surface area of 610 km&sup2;. A vast network of canals uses water from Lake Assad to irrigate lands on both sides of the Euphrates. In addition, the lake provides drinking water for the city of Aleppo and supports a fishing industry. The shores of Lake Assad have developed into important ecological zones.</p><br>
<h2>Project history</h2><br>
<p>The first plans for a dam in the Syrian part of the Euphrates date to 1927, but these were not carried out. In 1957, an agreement was reached with the Soviet Union for technical and financial aid for the construction of a dam in the Euphrates, and in 1960 a financial agreement was signed with West Germany. Another agreement to finance the project was signed with the Soviet Union in 1965. The project included a hydroelectric power station in the Tabqa Dam, and the construction of a vast irrigation network capable of irrigating 640,000 hectare of land on both sides of the Euphrates. Construction of the dam lasted between 1968 and 1973 and the flooding of the reservoir commenced in 1974 by reducing the flow of the Euphrates. In 1975, Iraq complained that the flow of the Euphrates had been reduced below an acceptable level and threatened to bomb the Tabqa Dam; mediation by Saudi Arabia and the Soviet Union eventually settled this dispute.</p><br>
<h3>Rescue excavations in the Lake Assad region</h3><br>
<p>In anticipation of the flooding of the Tabqa Dam reservoir, an intensive, international program of archaeological rescue excavations was carried out in the threatened area between 1963 and 1974. As part of this program, excavations have been carried out at sites ranging in date from the Late Natufian to the Ottoman period. Excavated sites include Tell Abu Hureyra, Emar, Habuba Kabira, Mureybet, Tell es-Sweyhat, Tell Fray and Dibsi Faraj. At Qalat Jabar, a castle on a hilltop that would be turned into an island by the flooding of Lake Assad, a protective glacis was built and two minarets at Mureybet and Meskene were relocated to an area beyond the flood zone.</p><br>
<h2>Characteristics</h2><br>
<p>The maximum capacity of Lake Assad is 11.7 km3 at a surface area of 610 km&sup2, making it the largest lake in Syria. The actual capacity is, however, much lower at 9.6 km3, resulting in a surface area of 447 km&sup2;. The proposed irrigation scheme suffered from a number of problems, including the high gypsum content in the reclaimed soils around Lake Assad, soil salinization, the collapse of canals that distributed the water from Lake Assad, and the unwillingness of farmers to resettle in the reclaimed areas. As a result, only 60,000 hectare were irrigated from Lake Assad in 1984. In 2000, the irrigated surface had risen to 124,000 hectare, which is 19 percent of the projected 640,000 hectare. Lake Assad is the most important source of drinking water to Aleppo, providing the city through a pipeline with 80,000,000 m&sup3; of drinking water per year. The lake also supports a fishing industry.</p><br>
<p>The western shore of the lake has developed into an important marshland area. On the southeastern shore, some areas have been reforested with evergreen trees including the Aleppo pine and the Euphrates poplar. Lake Assad is an important wintering location for migratory birds and the government has recently undertaken measures to protect small areas along the shores of Lake Assad from hunters by downgrading access roads. The island of Jazirat al-Thawra has been designated a nature reserve.</p><br>
<p>During the Syrian Civil War, water levels in Lake Assad have dropped significantly. This drop is possibly caused by the power station of the Tabqa Dam, which pumps more water out of the lake than is supplied by the Euphrates.</p><br>
<p>Kibby Mountain is a mountain located in Franklin County, Maine, about 3.5 mi east of the Canada–United States border. Kibby Mountain is flanked to the southeast by Spencer Bale Mountain.</p><br>
<p>Kibby Mountain stands within the watershed of the Kennebec River, which drains into the Gulf of Maine. The north side of Kibby Mountain drains into the East Branch of the Moose River, then into the South Branch of the Moose, the Moose River, and the Kennebec River. The west side of Kibby Mountain drains into Caribou Flow, then into the South Branch of the Moose River. The southwest end of Kibby Mountain drains into the Middle Branch of Kibby Stream, then into Spencer Stream and the Dead River, another tributary of the Kennebec. The southeast side of Kibby Mountain drains into the West Branch of Spencer Stream.</p><br>
<p>The Kibby Wind Power Project is located on the mountain.</p><br>
<p>Optima Lake was built to be a reservoir in Texas County, Oklahoma. The site is located just north of Hardesty and east of Guymon in the Oklahoma Panhandle.</p><br>
<p>The earthen Optima Lake Dam (National ID # OK20510) was completed in 1978 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, with a height of 120 feet, and a length at its crest of 16,875 feet. Although designed to contain a maximum of 618,500 acre-feet of water, the lake never reached more than 5 percent of its capacity, and remains effectively empty. Rapid declines in streamflow related to large-scale pumping from the High Plains Aquifer, also known as the Ogallala Aquifer, coincided with the completion of dam construction to make this lake a dramatic example of unanticipated environmental impacts.</p><br>
<p>The US Army Corps of Engineers website states (emphasis in original):</p><br>
<p>"Visitors should be aware that the lake&#39;s level can be very low. Depending on rainfall and evaporation rates, the lake may offer no water-based recreation and may not be suitable for swimming, fishing, boating or other activities. Visitors should come for the quiet natural setting--with or without water in the lake area."</p><br>
<p>The lake surroundings offer few to no amenities since lake camping facilities and buildings were dismantled for public safety by the Corps of Engineers in 2010.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The project was originally included as part of the Flood Control Act of 1936, as modified by the Flood Control Act of 1950, but planning and political wrangling delayed the start of construction until 1966. The intent was for the reservoir to fill primarily from the flow of the Beaver River, also known as the North Canadian River. Normal flow on the Beaver River, from 1937 to 1966, averaged 32.2 cubic feet per second. The river had occasional floods, including an October 1923 flood amounting to 109,000 acre-feet of water, and a September 1941 flood in which the Beaver’s flow increased to 44,200 cubic feet per second. The river’s most recent flow of significance was in October 1965 at 17,800 cubic feet per second. In the end the project was authorized for flood control, drinking and irrigation water in the relatively dry Oklahoma panhandle, recreation and fish & wildlife conservation.</p><br>
<p>The Guymon Chamber of Commerce, which enthusiastically backed the project, published a pamphlet that touted its expected virtues. The brochure forecast that the lake would be 100 ft deep, and its arms would flood up to 10 miles up Beaver River and 9 miles along its tributary, Coldwater Creek.</p><br>
<p>During the 12 years of construction by the USA Army Corps of Engineers, flow of the Beaver dropped. It was later recognized that, because the source of the Beaver was the underground Ogallala Aquifer, being the water table beneath far western Oklahoma and parts of seven other Western states, and because of increased pressure on said aquifer due to expanded irrigation and drinking water withdrawals, the river’s flow was being reduced to a trickle.</p><br>
<p>The $46.1-million project was completed in 1978. The dam was constructed as compacted earthfill embankment with gated outlet works and a 1,500-foot long uncontrolled saddle spillway. The top of the dam is at 2821.0 feet of elevation above sea level. The specifications put the top of the maximum pool at 2814.2 feet, the top of the flood control pool at 2779.0 feet, the top of the conservation pool at 2763.5 feet, and the top of the inactive pool at 2726.0 feet. The conservation pool was designed to hold 117,500 acre-feet of water, with 76,200 acre-feet designated to be available as a water supply. The flood pool capacity was designed for 229,500 acre-feet, while absolute maximum capacity of the lake was set at 618,500 acre feet. During the first full year of operation in 1979, the Corps remained optimistic and declared, "The optimum visitation for the project is 600,000 annual visitors and will be reached in 2014."</p><br>
<p>But water flow in the Beaver, 1977–1987, averaged only 7 ft/s, far less than the 32.2 ft/s historical average. In the mid-80s, the Corps began to recognize that the reduced flow of the Beaver was permanent and the reservoir was not going to fill: the maximum lake level was achieved May 31, 1980 at an elevation of 2722.90 feet, whereas the very bottom of the conservation pool was intended to be 2726.00 feet. Subsequently, the water level in the Beaver dropped even further. In the last five years (1989-1993) the USA Geological Survey could measure its current near Guymon, the Beavers flow averaged less than one-fifth of 1 ft/s.</p><br>
<p>The Corps closed the park in 1995 although the site remained open to the public. With funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, about 161 decaying structures including picnic structures, campsites, restrooms, dump stations and numerous power poles, were demolished by September 2010 for safety reasons. As of 2014, the project was receiving 2000 to 5000 visitors annually.</p><br>
<p>A spending controversy erupted In 2009, when the Corps wanted to use $1.2 million of economic stimulus money to replace rotting guardrails on each side of the paved road across the top of the Optima Dam used by approximately 15 cars a day. Public criticism caused the Corps to instead gate and padlock the road at a cost of $1000. Per the Corps’ September 2010 Section 216 Initial Appraisal Report on Optima Lake, the Corps continues to spend approximately $160,000/year for annual inspections of dam structures, detailed inspections at 5-year intervals, and repairs as budgets allow. That same report indicates the existing dam structures (gate tower, stilling basin, uncontrolled spillway and outlet works) remain in operational condition.</p><br>
<p>The overall project included the Optima National Wildlife Refuge, run by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, being initially 2,605 acres along Coldwater Creek—which has its confluence with the Beaver 0.2 miles upstream from the dam-- and the Optima Wildlife Management Area, public hunting lands managed by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, initially 2,141 acres along the Beaver. However, the decreased size of the lake itself has led to Optima National Wildlife Refuge being increased to 4,334 acres, and the area managed by Oklahoma, including licensed Corps lands above and below the dam, increasing to 8,062 acres.</p><br>
<p>The Château de Saint-Hubert was a royal château built by order of Louis XV in Perray-in-Yvelines , for use while he was hunting in the nearby forest . The design was entrusted to Ange-Jacques Gabriel, designer of the École Militaire, and the building was under construction from 1755 to 1758.</p><br>
<p>Saint-Hubert was originally intended as a simple hunting lodge, to allow the King to rest during and after the hunt without calling on his cousin, the duc de Penthièvre. Work was not completed by 1756, and it was decided to turn Saint-Hubert into a full château, with a main building housing 25 nobles, plus two projecting service wings and a gatehouse creating a courtyard. The main room was elaborately decorated with painted stucco.</p><br>
<p>The building was still not completed by the death of Louis XV, and Louis XVI abandoned it as too expensive. Instead, he bought the Château de Rambouillet from the duc de Penthièvre. Saint-Hubert then fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1855. Little remains today.</p><br>
<p>Louis XV had planned a model village around the Château de Saint-Hubert, but it also was never completed.</p><br>

<p>Brandywine Battlefield Historic Site is a National Historical Landmark. The historic park was owned and operated by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, on 50 acre, near Chadds Ford, Delaware County, Pennsylvania in the United States. It is part of the site of the Battle of Brandywine fought on September 11, 1777, during the American Revolution. The Battle of Brandywine covered more than ten square miles, or 35,000 acres. However, the modern park only covers 50 acres which served primarily as the Continental encampment the two days prior to the battle. The battle was a major victory for the British and enabled them to capture the city of Philadelphia. Brandywine Battlefield Park became a Pennsylvania State Park in 1949 and a National Historic Landmark in 1961.</p><br>
<p>To the north, another part of the battlefield is maintained by Birmingham Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania as "Battlefield of the Brandywine Park," or "Sandy Hollow Heritage Park." Much of the afternoon&#39;s fighting took place between Birmingham Friends Meetinghouse and Dilworthtown.</p><br>
<p>On August 14, 2009, the state closed the battlefield and three other PHMC museums indefinitely due to a lack of funding as part of an ongoing budget crisis. The historic site opened again after 11 days, operating under an interim agreement between the PHMC and Chadds Ford Township with the Brandywine Battlefield Associates, or "Friends of Brandywine Battlefield" who now operate the site with staff and volunteers.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Brandywine Battlefield Park is about a half-mile east of Brandywine Creek in southeastern Pennsylvania. Its proximity to Philadelphia, about 30 miles, led directly to the land being the location of a major battle of the American Revolution. The creek itself was a major military obstacle during the 1770s. Brandywine Creek served as a "moat" that blocked British access to the Schuylkill River and the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. The British Army sought to seize control of Philadelphia, drive the Congress out of the city and thereby bring an end to the war. The area was also a crossroads of the Thirteen Colonies. Control of the roads was crucial to the supply of both the British and Continental Armies.</p><br>
<h2>Battle</h2><br>
<p>General George Washington moved his troops to the Chadds Ford area to control the high ground, prevent the British Army under the command of General Howe from taking Philadelphia and to avoid being trapped between the British Army on land and the Royal Navy which was positioned on the Delaware River in September 1777. The British had landed at the head of Maryland&#39;s Elk River, on the northern end of the Chesapeake Bay near present-day Elkton, approximately 40–50 miles (60–80 km) southwest of Philadelphia and were marching towards Philadelphia.</p><br>
<p>The British grouped forces at nearby Kennett Square. Howe had no intention of mounting a full-scale attack against the prepared American defenses. He instead employed a flanking maneuver similar to those used in the Battle of Long Island. A portion of the army, about 5,000 men under the command of Wilhelm von Knyphausen, were to advance to meet Washingtons troops at Chadds Ford, while the remainder, under the command of Lord Charles Cornwallis, were to march north to Jefferis Ford, several miles to the north, which Washington had overlooked, and then march south to flank the American forces.</p><br>
<p>September 11 began with a heavy fog, which provided cover for the British troops. Washington received contradictory reports about the British troop movements and continued to believe that the main force was moving to attack at Chadds Ford. The British appeared on the Americans right flank at around 2 p.m. With Hazens brigades outflanked, General John Sullivan, tried to reposition his troops to meet the unexpected British threat to their right flank. But Howe was slow to attack the American troops, which bought time for the Americans to position some of their men on high ground at Birmingham Meeting House, about a mile (2 km) north of Chadds Ford. By 4 p.m., the British attacked and quickly gained the ground from the Continental Army. Sullivan then attacked a group of Hessian troops trying to outflank the Americans near Meeting House Hill and bought some time for most of the men to withdraw. But Sullivan&#39;s men were cut down by return British fire, forcing them to retreat.</p><br>
<p>At this point, Washington and Greene arrived with reinforcements to try to hold off the British, who now occupied Meeting House Hill. The remains of Sullivan&#39;s men held off the pursuing British for nearly an hour but were eventually forced to retreat. The Americans were also forced to leave behind most of their cannon on Meeting House Hill because most of the artillery horses were killed.</p><br>
<p>Knyphausen, on the east bank of Brandywine Creek, launched an attack against the weakened American center across Chadds Ford, breaking through and Waynes division and forcing him to retreat and leave behind most of his cannons. Armstrongs militia, never engaged in the combat, also decided to retreat from their positions. Further north, Greene sent Colonel Weedons troops to cover the road just outside the town of Dilworth to hold off the British long enough for the rest of the Continental Army to retreat. Darkness brought the British pursuit to a standstill, which then left Weedons force to retreat. The defeated Americans were forced to retreat to Chester where most of them arrived at midnight, with some stragglers arriving until morning.</p><br>
<p>The battle cost the British about 89 killed and 487 wounded, while they claimed to have killed 200 Colonials, wounded 750 more, and captured over 400 as well as destroying or capturing 11 of the American artillery guns.</p><br>
<p>Although Howe had defeated the American army, the unexpected resistance he had met prevented him from destroying it completely. The American morale had not been destroyed; despite losing the battle, the Americans had good spirits hoping to fight the British again another day. But neither commander in the battle had proven themselves. Washington had committed a serious error in leaving his right flank wide open and nearly brought on destruction if it had not been for Sullivan, Sterling, and Stephen&#39;s divisions that fought for time. Howe had waited too long to attack the American right flank, showing again his lack of killer instincts because he was still afraid of sustaining heavy casualties since the costly victory at the Battle of Bunker Hill two years earlier, and thus allowed most of the American army to escape.</p><br>
<p>British and American forces maneuvered around each other for the next several days with only minor encounters such as the Paoli Massacre on the night of September 20–21.</p><br>
<p>The Continental Congress abandoned Philadelphia, first to Lancaster, Pennsylvania for one day and then to York, Pennsylvania. Military supplies were moved out of the city to Reading, Pennsylvania. On September 26, 1777, British forces marched into Philadelphia unopposed.</p><br>
<h2>Park facilities</h2><br>
<p>Brandywine Battlefield Park was the site of a thriving farming community until just before the battle. Quaker farmers were getting ready to harvest their crops, plant winter wheat, slaughter beef cattle, hogs, shear their sheep and sell their yearling colts and fillies. The pacifist Quakers were thrust into the center of the battle and much of their farmland, livestock, and crops were destroyed.</p><br>
<p>The American officers seized their farmhouses before the battle and the victorious British officers occupied the Quakers homes after the battle. These homes have been restored to their 1777 appearance and are open to the public. The Benjamin Ring House is believed to have been used as headquarters by George Washington before the battle. A collection of Quaker style furniture is on display at the house with historical information about the battle and Washingtons stay at the house. The Gideon Gilpin Farmhouse is on the opposite side of the park. It too has been restored and furnished with vintage Quaker furniture. It served at the base of operations for Marquis de Lafayette before and during the battle.</p><br>
<p>Reenactors portray Hessian, Quaker farmers, and British and Continental soldiers during many special events held at the park during the year. Staff and volunteers provided daily guided tours of the park and battlefield. They also guide hands on activities, give speeches, sponsor seminars, and host open houses. Much of the battlefield is preserved but encroaching suburban sprawl is threatening the park. The park is protected by its status as a National Historic Landmark District, designated as such by the United States Congress in 1997, 220 years after the Battle of Brandywine.</p><br>
<h2>Current affairs</h2><br>
<p>The Gideon Gilpin Farmhouse used by Lafayette has been restored to its 1770s appearance. The Benjamin Ring House used by General George Washington, was used on and off until the 1930s, when young local residents accidentally set off a bomb (fire)</p><br>
<p>that destroyed the home. In the 1950s, a new home was built to reflect the time period of the 1770s.</p><br>
<p>The Tre Cime di Lavaredo , also called the Drei Zinnen , are three distinctive battlement-like peaks, in the Sexten Dolomites of northeastern Italy. They are probably one of the best-known mountain groups in the Alps. The three peaks, from east to west, are:</p><br>

<p>The peaks are composed of well-layered dolostones of the Dolomia Principale (Hauptdolomit) formation, Carnian to Rhaetian in age, as are many other groups in the Dolomites (e.g., the Tofane, the Pelmo or the Cinque Torri).</p><br>
<p>Until 1919 the peaks formed part of the border between Italy and Austria. Now they lie on the border between the Italian provinces of South Tyrol and Belluno and still are a part of the linguistic boundary between German-speaking and Italian-speaking majorities. The Cima Grande has an elevation of 2,999 m. It stands between the Cima Piccola, at 2,857 m, and the Cima Ovest, at 2,973 m.</p><br>
<h2>First ascents</h2><br>
<p>The first ascent of the Cima Grande was on August 21, 1869, by Paul Grohmann with guides Franz Innerkofler and Peter Salcher. The Cima Ovest was first climbed exactly ten years later, on August 21, 1879, by Michel Innerkofler with G. Ploner, a tourist. The Cima Piccola was first climbed on July 25, 1881, by Michel and Hans Innerkofler. The routes of these three first ascents are still the normal ascent routes; the Cima Piccola&#39;s route is the most difficult of the three.</p><br>
<p>Emilio Comici was the first to climb the north face of the Cima Grande in 1933 in a party of three, after an ascent time of 3 days and 2 nights. This partly overhanging northern face is considered by climbers to be one of the great north faces of the Alps.</p><br>
<h2>Tourism</h2><br>
<p>Tre Cime Natural Park is named after the famous peaks. The visitor centre provides information concerning the trails, natural and man-made landscapes of the Sexten Dolomites and it is located at the former Grand Hotel in Dobbiaco.</p><br>
<p>Numerous well-marked routes lead from the surrounding communities to and around the peaks. The most common route is from Paternkofel/Monte Paterno to the alpine hut Auronzo at 2,333 m (7,654 ft), over Paternsattel (Patern Pass) to the alpine hut Dreizinnenhütte/Locatelli at 2,405 m (7,890 ft), and then to the peaks. There are a number of other routes as well.</p><br>
<p>Nearby communities include Auronzo di Cadore (in the province of Belluno, region of Veneto), Toblach/Dobbiaco, Sexten/Sesto, and the Puster Valley (in the province of Bolzano, region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol).</p><br>
<p>The area has also staged many finishes in Giro d&#39;Italia.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Since the front line between Italy and Austria during World War I ran through the Tre Cime peaks, there are a number of fortifications, man-made caves, and commemorative plaques in the area. To this day, the trenches, tunnels, and iron ladders around Tre Cime remind us of the fierce fighting witnessed by these peaks during the war.</p><br>
<h2>Film appearances</h2><br>
<p>A number of feature films have used Tre Cime for location shooting, including "The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Tales of Innocence" (1999) and The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles both starring Sean Patrick Flanery.</p><br>
<p>More recently, in May 2017 it was reported that the Han Solo spin-off within the Star Wars universe was filmed at Tre Cime as well.</p><br>
<p>Anbangbang Billabong lies in the shadow of Nourlangie Rock within Kakadu National Park and is a good place to view a wide range of wildlife. Large numbers of water fowl and wading birds inhabit the billabong and many wallabies can be found grazing around the water’s edge. There is a walking trail around the circumference of Anbangbang billabong with many picnic areas.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The Anbangbang Billabong is overlooked by the Nawurlandja and Nourlangie plateaus. In the wet season, it is fed by runoff from these plateaus, as well as overflow from Nourlangie Creek, however during the dry season it is cut off.</p><br>
<h3>Fauna</h3><br>
<p>Like much of Kakadu, Anbangbang Billabong is home to a particularly large variety of bird life. The fluctating water levels draw waterfowl such as Magpie Geese, Pelicans, Darters, Spoonbills and Brolga. Other fauna known to frequent the billabong include Wallabies, Long-necked Turtles, Dingoes and Goannas.</p><br>
<p>Mangroves lining the billabong support populations of Freshwater mussel. Adjacent woodlands play host to a different ecosystem again. The nearby Nawurlandja plateau supports local populations of Short-eared rock-wallaby and Chestnut-quilled rock pigeon, among other species.</p><br>
<h3>Flora</h3><br>
<p>The swelling billabong promotes seasonal growth of Sedges, Grasses and Water Lilies, and Freshwater mangrove line the water&#39;s edge. Swamp areas support many types of paperbark, in particular the Weeping paperbark, Silver-leaved paperbark and Broad-leaved paperbark.</p><br>
<p>The woodlands surrounding the billabong are a lush habitat comprising an abundance of plant species. Darwin woollybutt and Darwin Stringybark dominate, with large populations of Fan palms, Kapok, Red Apples, Wattle and Pandanus.</p><br>
<h3>Climate</h3><br>
<p>Like much of Kakadu, the Anbangbang Billabong regions climate is monsoonal. The regions aboriginal owners recognize six seasons, however these can be reduced to vastly differing dry and wet seasons where the billabong is respectively depleted and replenished.</p><br>
<h2>Tourism</h2><br>
<p>Anbangbang Billabong has a marked, 2.5 km circular walk, popular with tourists to Kakadu National Park, but accessible only during the dry season. It is a hotspot for bird watching during the late dry and early wet seasons due to the abundance of birdlife. The nearby Nourlangie plateau and Anbangbang shelter are of particular interest for their aboriginal rock art and 20,000 year old history.</p><br>
<h2>Aboriginal beliefs</h2><br>
<p>A local creation story tells that the Anbangbang Billabong was formed by a pair of Short-eared rock wallabies, or Badbong, who are responsible for cutting the rock and parting the trees to form the current landscape.</p><br>
<h2>Etymology</h2><br>
<p>The name Anbangbang has no known meaning.</p><br>
<p>Lake Buhi is a lake found in Buhi, Camarines Sur in the Philippines. It has an area of 18 km&sup2; and has an average depth of 8 m. The lake lies in the valley formed by two ancient volcanoes, Mount Iriga  and Mount Malinao. It was created in 1641, when an earthquake caused a side of Mount Asog to collapse. The resulting landslide created a natural dam that blocked the flow of nearby streams. Another theory suggests that it was created by the eruption of Mt. Asog, which is now dormant.</p><br>
<p>The lake is famous since it is one of the few bodies of water that contains the sinarapan (Mistichthys luzonensis) which is the world&#39;s smallest commercially harvested fish.</p><br>
<p>Aside from the sinarapan, Lake Buhi is also home for other marine organisms such as the Irin-irin (Redigobius bikolanus), Dalag (Channa striata), Puyo (Anabas testudineus), Kotnag (Hemiramphus sp.), Burirawan (Strophidon sathete) and native catfish (Clarias sp.). Other fishes are introduced to boost the fishery industry such as the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and Bangkok hito (Clarias sp.).</p><br>
<p>The forest surrounding the lake is the home of at least 25 bird species. The five endemic species are the Philippine pygmy woodpecker, Philippine hanging parrot, black-naped monarch, elegant tit and the white-eared brown dove. Other fauna found in the forest are flying lizards (Draco sp.), skinks, monitor lizards (Varanus marmoratus), civets, bats and the Philippine Cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis).</p><br>
<p>Today the lake is the main source of water supply for the National Power Corporation Hydro Electric Plant. The power plant, which was founded in 1952, generates an average of 2.8 megawatts. It is also used by the National Irrigation Administration to irrigate at least 100 km&sup2; of the Riconada towns located downstream and Iriga City.</p><br>
<h2>Fish kill</h2><br>
<p>On September 22, 2007, a fish kill in Camarines Surs Lake Buhi threatened the livelihood of local fishermen. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) stated that it resulted from sulfur dioxide from Iriga City, since the rains by the southwest monsoon loosened the sulfur dioxide from nearby volcanoes. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) rejected BFARs finding. Buhi has 67,762 people and 13,238 households.</p><br>
<p>Asea  is a village and a community in Arcadia, Greece, in the Peloponnese peninsula. Asea is situated on a hillside at about 800 m elevation. It is 2 km northeast of Athinaio, 11 km east of Megalopoli and 14 km southwest of Tripoli. Asea was the seat of the municipality of Valtetsi. The community Asea consists of the villages Asea  and Kato Asea  which is the more affluent and cosmopolitan of the two villages. Although Asea has only about 200 permanent inhabitants, its natural environment and archeological sites attract weekend and summer visitors. However, an infestation of arachnids in 2015 has decreased tourism in recent years.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Ancient Asea occupied a hilltop site and is believed to have been settled by the late Early Helladic period. Evidence suggests that this was destroyed by fire and that the site was reoccupied during the Middle Helladic (MH). Remains consist of much Black Minyan pottery of various types and a number of graves. The lack of evidence later than the late MH period could result from abandonment of the site at that time or just from natural erosion.</p><br>
<p>Asea is said to be named for Aseatas, son of the Spartan king, Lykaon, however it may have been established as early as 6000 BC. Its treasures are kept in archaeological museums in Tripoli, Nafplio, and Athens. The ruins of the ancient city still stand, most notably doric temples dedicated to Poseidon and Athena, and they indicate that Asea was once a prosperous city. According to Pausanias, the two temples were erected by Odysseus after his return to Ithaca. Inhabitants of Asea fought in the historic battles of Plataies (479 BC) and Battle of Mantinea (362 BC). City coins have been found dated 196 BC. Asea took part in the founding of the city of Megalopoli.</p><br>

<p>Asea is the birthplace of Nikos Gatsos, a twentieth-century poet. Nikos Gatsos was born 1911 and died in 1992. He was buried in Asea.</p><br>
<p>Toddbrook Reservoir was built in 1831 as a feeder for the Peak Forest Canal. It is sited above the town of Whaley Bridge in the High Peak, Derbyshire. The reservoir is a Site of Special Scientific Interest . It provides habitat for herons, ducks and other animals and fish. Also rare mosses and liverworts grow on its shores, particularly short-lived species that grow on seasonally exposed mud. The reservoir is also used for sailing and angling. It hosts many sailing events including DYS . The reservoir is owned by the Canal & River Trust and, like Combs Reservoir, is a feeder reservoir for Peak Forest Canal. The feeder runs though Whaley Bridge, and  enters the canal system in a pool close to the transhipments shed at the Whaley Bridge Canal Basin.</p><br>
<p>The reservoir is fed from a stream named Todd Brook, which has a large catchment area including the shining tor moor land above the reservoir, through which the brook flows. Water enters the reservoir on its north bank through a small waterfall. The first several inches of this do not flow into the reservoir and continue flowing down the reservoirs run off and into the River Goyt. This means that the reservoir often receives little or no inflow during periods where rainfall does not allow the level to exceed this barrier. This often has significant impact on the reservoirs water level, particularly in the summer months.</p><br>
<h2>Dam works</h2><br>
<p>In the 1980s British Waterways carried out significant repair works to the dam to deal with leaks involving the mining shafts located around the dam. This resulted in a culvert being constructed under the current beach/launching area for the reservoir. A stone marker could be seen on the main beach showing the location of this for many years, but was relocated to the footpath opposite Toddbrook Lodge during access work for the 2009 draining.</p><br>
<p>It was known that the local coal mining industry had been a challenge for the dam&#39;s integrity for many years. The original builders were forced to purchase a block of coal below the dam in situ in order to ensure its mining did not cause structural issues.</p><br>
<p>The reservoir was also partially drained in 2009 for re-alignment works on the dam, and again subsequently in 2010.</p><br>
<p>South Norwood Lake and Grounds is a park in South Norwood in the London Borough of Croydon. The main entrance is in Woodvale Avenue while other entrances are located in Auckland Road and Sylvan Road. The area measures up to 28 acres 11.53 hectares.</p><br>
<h2>About</h2><br>
<p>The lake was originally created as a reservoir for the Croydon Canal, which from 1809 to 1836 ran between Croydon and the Grand Surrey Canal at New Cross. Today is now used by local anglers, who fish for carp, bream and perch among others, and Croydon Sailing Club. The lake is also home to a variety of aquatic birds including a number of great crested grebes as well as regularly sighted herons and ringed-necked parakeets that can be seen nesting on the island.</p><br>
<p>As well as the lake there is a bowling green, tennis and basketball courts, football pitches, a cricket pitch, a playground and a trim trail. The park still has active Park Rangers and has a Park Ranger&#39;s office with public toilets.</p><br>
<h2>Fishing</h2><br>
<p>In 2004 there was a massive fishing kill due to blue green algae and the predominant fish species left was Carp and Perch. The Carp at the time were over 20+ up to 39 lb and were noted to be picky as there were few other fish in the lake to eat the food. The lake itself has lots of natural food including a blood worm bar.</p><br>
<p>The Elephant Hotel is an historic former hotel which today serves as the town hall in Somers, in Westchester County, New York, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places  on August 7, 1974 as Somers Town House and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2005 as Elephant Hotel. It is also a contributing property in the NRHP-listed Somers Hamlet Historic District.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Hachaliah Bailey (known as the creator of Bailey Circus) built the Elephant Hotel in Somers, NY, after buying an African Elephant, which he named "Old Bet". Bailey intended to use the elephant for farm work, but the number of people it attracted caused Bailey to tour her throughout the northeast. Baileys success inspired numerous others to tour with exotic animals, and during the 1830s the old style circus and Baileys attractions merged to form the modern circus. Due to this, Somers is known as the "Cradle of the American Circus".</p><br>
<p>Old Bet was killed on tour in 1827, when she was shot by a local farmer. Bailey later erected the Elephant Hotel in Somers, in honor of Old Bet. It is said Old Bet was buried in front of the building.</p><br>
<p>In 1835, the hotel was incorporated by the Zoological Institute.</p><br>
<p>The Elephant Hotel was purchased by the town of Somers in 1927. It is a town landmark and was dedicated a National Historic Landmark in 2005.</p><br>
<p>The Elephant Hotel is currently the Somers Town Hall. It is located at 335 US 202, across from the northern end of NY 100.</p><br>
<p>The NRHP listing is described in its NRHP nomination document.</p><br>
<h2>Museum of the Early American Circus</h2><br>
<p>The Somers Historical Society occupies the third floor of the building. The Society operates the Museum of the Early American Circus, which is open on Thursday afternoons and for special holidays.</p><br>

<p>Fricks Locks Historic District or more simply Fricks Lock is an abandoned village, along the also abandoned Schuylkill Canal, in the northeast portion of East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. This 18th-century village outlasted the canal, being abandoned in the late 20th century with the construction of the adjacent Limerick Nuclear Power Plant. The village on about 18 acres of land were listed as a historic district by the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. Fricks Locks is considered a modern ghost town and, although private property, attracts visitors.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<h3>Canal era</h3><br>
<p>While some buildings date from the American Revolutionary War era, the village name was a result of the "Schuylkill Navigation" canal. The canal required construction, in the early 1820s, of a set of locks at that point along the Schuylkill River. Locks #54 and #55 were built on farmland acquired from John Frick and the village became known as Fricks Locks. The village thrived due to the economic stimulus of the canal. Eventually the commercial canal traffic declined toward the turn of the century and gave way to the railroad. Fricks Locks had become the singular Frick&#39;s Lock after the Pennsylvania Schuylkill Valley Railroad arrived and built a station with the latter name. The canal was filled in starting in 1942. While the railroad eventually declined after Conrail was formed on April 1, 1976, the village remained inhabited until near the end of the 20th century.</p><br>
<h3>Nuclear era</h3><br>
<p>In the 1960s, the then Philadelphia Electric Company (PECO) began the process of building the Limerick Nuclear Power Station immediately across the river from Fricks Lock. The station went on line in 1986. During the project, PECO acquired all the land around the station site, which included Fricks Lock. There are possibly conflicting stories as to the residents being bought out and relocated nearby and one that describes a 48-hour notice forced eviction. In any event the buildings were vacated and simply boarded up. There is evidence that some of the buildings were later occupied by an environmental study company retained by PECO.</p><br>
<h3>Present day</h3><br>
<p>In the late 1990s Paul S. Frick (1925-2014), in an effort to preserve the property along with family history, began compiling all of the historical information and then hired Estelle Cremers who lived in the area, to assist him. Paul paid for all the costs and work that led to the property being listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 21, 2003. In February 2011, East Coventry Township partnered with Exelon Corporation to preserve and protect the historic site. Under this new agreement, Exelon effectively donated the land and eleven historic structures at Frick&#39;s Lock Village to East Coventry Township, valued at an estimated $1 million. In addition, Exelon will spend close to $2.5 million to stabilize and rehabilitate these historic structures.</p><br>
<h2>Ghost town</h2><br>
<p>Because of its reputation as a modern ghost town, Fricks Lock attracts many curious individuals and groups, including ghost hunters. Its isolated location and abandoned status also attracts vandals. The inclusion of the Fricks Lock in the 2005 book, Weird Pennsylvania, and numerous web photo essays of the buildings have increased its popularity. The web sites have also documented its increased deterioration, including the aforementioned vandalism and the collapse of some porch structures.</p><br>
<p>As of March 2008, Fricks Lock remains a hotbed for many thrill seekers and vandals. Interest in the area has grown since a fire destroyed the Lock Tenders House in February 2008. Since then, Exelon has made numerous attempts to clean up debris from the property and to close up open wells and open buildings. Vandals continue with their destruction of the buildings.</p><br>
<p>Police are now attempting to discourage the continued vandalism by citing all unauthorized people found on the property with trespassing.</p><br>
<p>Caribou Mountain is a mountain on the Canada–United States border, the section of which follows the height of land of the Saint Lawrence River watershed. The peak is located about 0.5 mi inside Franklin County, Maine. The southwest end of Caribou&#39;s summit ridge is in Le Granit Regional County Municipality, Québec.</p><br>
<p>The northwest side of Caribou Mountain drains into the West Branch of the Moose River, thence into the South Branch of the Moose, the Moose River, and the Kennebec River, then into the Gulf of Maine. The southeast side of Caribou Mountain drains into Number Six Brook, then into the South Branch of the Moose River. The southwest end of Caribou Mountain drains into Rivière aux Araignées in Saint-Augustin-de-Woburn, Quebec, then into Lac aux Araignées, Lac Mégantic, the Rivière Chaudière, the Saint Lawrence River, and into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.</p><br>
<p>Lake Hall is a small lake located in central Leon County, Florida, United States. It is located just north of Interstate 10 and slightly west of USA Highway 319 and within Tallahassee city limits.</p><br>
<p>Lake Hall forms the south, western, and part of the northern boundaries of Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park and is home to the Tallahassee Rowing Club. The other shores of Lake Hall are lined with private property and private homes.</p><br>
<h2>Hydrology</h2><br>
<p>Lake Hall is classified as an oligotrophic lake and has the distinction of having the best water quality of all lakes in Leon County according to TAPP, a local water quality and conservation group. Due to its clarity, the lake is suspected to be spring fed although no connection has been found to the Floridan Aquifer via a sinkhole.</p><br>
<p>The lake supports beds of Vallisneria americana and Sagittaria stagnorum but contains no hydrilla. Some hydrilla was discovered in the southern lobe of the lake and grass carp were introduced to control the plant.</p><br>
<p>Fish found in Lake Hall include largemouth bass, bluegills bream, Crappie, Brown Bullhead Catfish, Channel Catfish, and Yellow Bullhead Catfish.</p><br>
<p>Lake Hall is also home to the swim portion of the Redhills Sprint Triathlon.</p><br>
<p>Baldpate Mountain is a mountain located in Oxford County, Maine. Baldpate has two prominent peaks; West Peak has 3,662 ft of elevation, and stands 222 ft above the col between them.</p><br>
<p>Baldpate is flanked to the north by Surplus Mountain, to the northeast by Black Mountain, and to the southeast by Mount Hittie. To the southwest, Baldpate Mountain faces Old Speck Mountain across Grafton Notch, which by convention marks the northeast end of the Mahoosuc Range.</p><br>
<p>Baldpate Mountain is within the watershed of the Androscoggin River, which drains into Merrymeeting Bay, the estuary of the Kennebec River, and then into the Gulf of Maine. The northwest side of Baldpate Mountain drains into the Swift Cambridge River, then into the Dead Cambridge River and Umbagog Lake, the source of the Androscoggin River. The southeast and southwest sides of Baldpate drain into the Bear River, then into the Androscoggin. The northeast side of Baldpate Mtn. drains into the West Branch of the Ellis River, then into the Androscoggin.</p><br>
<p>The Appalachian Trail, a 2,170 mi National Scenic Trail from Georgia to Maine, runs from Grafton Notch to Surplus Mountain across both peaks of Baldpate.</p><br>
<p>Hamlin Peak is a 4,756 ft mountain located in Baxter State Park in Piscataquis County, Maine. Hamlin Peak is a northern spur of the greater Mount Katahdin massif and is flanked to the south by Baxter Peak, and to the north by the Howe Peaks. Since it rises nearly 500 ft above the col joining it to the higher Baxter Peak, Hamlin Peak qualifies as a four-thousand footer based on the topographic prominence criterion used by the Appalachian Mountain Club, and is ranked as the second-highest peak in Maine.</p><br>
<p>The southeast face of Hamlin Peak drains into the Great Basin, where water ultimately flows into the Penobscot River and eventually empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Penobscot Bay.</p><br>
<p>There are several trails that lead to or near the summit of Hamlin Peak.</p><br>
<p>Bushy Run Battlefield Park is a historical park that is operated by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the on 218 acre in Penn Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania in the United States. It was the site of the Battle of Bushy Run fought on August 5–6, 1763 during the Pontiacs Rebellion. The battle was a major victory for the British and enabled them to secure their control of the Ohio River Valley and what was to become the Northwest Territory. Bushy Run Battlefield Park was established as a Pennsylvania State Park in the 1920s and became a National Historic Landmark in 1960. The Visitor Center is open Wednesday through Saturday from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm, and Sunday from noon to 5:00 pm, during the months of May–October. The Visitor Center hosts a museum exhibit entitled, "The March to Bushy Run", a theater, a gift shop and battlefield tours. Bushy Run Battlefield Park is the only historic site or museum that deals exclusively with Pontiacs Rebellion. Battle reenactments are held annually on the first full weekend of August. The park is on Pennsylvania Route 993 near Harrison City and Jeannette.</p><br>
<h2>Battle history</h2><br>
<p>The Battle of Bushy Run was fought between a British relief column under the command of Colonel Henry Bouquet and a combined force of Delaware, Shawnee, Mingo, and Huron warriors. In July 1763, a British relief column consisting of 500 British soldiers was sent to relieve Fort Pitt, then under siege. Under the command of Bouquet, the column left Carlisle, Pennsylvania. On August 5, while passing through present-day Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, the column was ambushed by a large force of Delaware, Shawnee, Mingo, and Huron 25 mi east of Fort Pitt. The British managed to hold their ground and, after the natives withdrew after sunset, Bouquet ordered a redoubt, made of sacks of flour, constructed on Edge Hill placing their wounded and livestock in the center of the redoubt.</p><br>
<p>The following morning, after the evening sentries were being relieved, the allied tribes attacked only to be ambushed themselves by the relieved sentries. As the tribal forces were flanked, the warriors fled in a disorganized retreat. With troops under Bouquet, the column dispersed the attackers before heading to Bushy Run, where there was badly needed water. The battle has since been attributed to Bushy Run despite the main fighting taking place in Edge Hill. Bouquet then marched to the relief of Fort Pitt. The battle was costly with 50 British soldiers killed. The confederacy of the Delaware, Shawnee, Mingo, and Huron also suffered an unknown number of casualties including two prominent Delaware chieftains.</p><br>
<h2>Park history</h2><br>
<p>The battlefield was acquired by the state and established as a state park in the 1920s. In August 2009, the state closed several PHMC museums indefinitely due to a lack of funding as part of an ongoing budget crisis. Bushy Run Battlefield was one of the sites set to be closed. With the help of the Bushy Run Battlefield Heritage Society, the site&#39;s volunteer organization, the museum has stayed open despite budget cuts. On May 5, 2010 the Bushy Run Battlefield Heritage Society came to an agreement with the PHMC to allow the volunteers to staff and operate the museum.</p><br>
<p>The Morgan–Manning House is an historic house located in Brockport, Monroe County, New York. It was built in 1854 and is a two-story, Italianate–style brick dwelling on a limestone foundation. The five-by-four-bay main block features a hipped roof and cupola. It has a two-story hipped roof wing with a smaller two-story brick appendage creating a stepped, or telescoping, plan or profile. The house also has a full width porch with brick piers. The interior features elaborate interior woodwork, period plasterwork, stained glass and decorated ceilings. Also on the property is a contributing carriage house.</p><br>
<p>The home was originally built for John C. Ostrom and was purchased in 1867 by Dayton S. Morgan and his wife Susan Jocelyn Morgan. Dayton Morgan was a local industrialist whose foundry, the Globe Iron Works, produced the first hundred mechanized reapers for Cyrus McCormick. Mr Morgan went on to produce his own very successful mechanized reapers with business partner William Seymour. The house remained in the Morgan family for almost the next hundred years. The Morgan family remodeled many of the rooms on the main floor of the house in the late Victorian style, embellishing the rooms oak and cherry paneling and trim, and stained glass windows. Dayton Morgan died in 1890. His daughter Sara Morgan married physician Frederick Manning in the 1890s. After the early death of her husband, Mrs. Manning returned to Brockport with her young son Arnold, who died at age 21 in 1916. Sara Morgan Manning stayed on in her parents&#39; house until her death in 1964, at age 96, following a disastrous fire that swept through the house.</p><br>
<p>Mrs. Manning bequeathed her home to her community. A group of local citizens formed the Western Monroe Historical Society to restore and care for the house, which had become a local landmark. The damage from the fire has been repaired and the house is furnished to reflect the lifestyle of a wealthy canal town resident during the second half of the 19th century, through the first quarter of the 20th century. The Society&#39;s collection includes many portraits of locally prominent 19th-century residents and furnishings from local families.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. It is designated as a Point of Interest on the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor by the National Park Service.</p><br>
<p>Strawberry Hill is a hill in San Francisco, California, near the center of Golden Gate Park. The hill occupies an entire island in the park&#39;s man-made Stow Lake, and is connected by two bridges to the mainland of the park.</p><br>
<p>The island is covered with a variety of trees and shrubbery and contains several trails and dirt steps that encircle and lead to the top of the hill.</p><br>
<h2>Huntington Falls</h2><br>
<p>Strawberry hill contains Huntington Falls, the first artificial 110 foot tall waterfall installed in Golden Gate Park that leads into the lake. The waterfall was named after railroad baron Collis Potter Huntington, who donated $25,000 to the cause.</p><br>
<h2>Golden Gate Pavilion</h2><br>
<p>The Golden Gate Pavilion, is a Chinese peace pagoda stands near the shore of the lake presented to San Francisco by its sister city Taipei in 1976.</p><br>
<h2>Sweeney Observatory</h2><br>
<p>The top of the hill is a quiet and peaceful open space with panoramic views of San Francisco although the view is slightly obscured by trees. In the center of the open area are the ruined foundations of the Sweeny Observatory, built in 1891 as a public viewpoint and destroyed by the 1906 earthquake.</p><br>
<p>Paths are closed to vehicle traffic. The hill is a popular destination for joggers and dog-walkers, especially on the weekends. Local high school track and cross country teams are frequently seen practicing running up and around the hill for resistance training.</p><br>

<p>The Davao River catchment is the third largest river catchment on the Southern Philippines Island of Mindanao. It drains an area of over 1700 km² with a river length of 160 km. Most of the area is uplands. Average flows within the river near to the mouth are estimated at 70-80 cubic meters per second. The climate type is relatively uniform throughout the year with evenly distributed rainfall and temperatures and humidity . The area rarely experiences typhoons.</p><br>

<p>The landform and landcover within the basin is highly diverse. Ranging from lowland urban, agricultural, wetland and mangrove to natural riparian, plantations, upland agriculture and mountainous forest including primary forest. The area is classified by DENR as 77.5% forestlands and 22.5% alienable and disposable land. This is not a true land uses (or land cover) classification. Detailed land use is not available. Information is available from several sources including the Comprehensive Land Use Plan of the City, however this data is as yet theoretical and does not represent the realities or suitability of land at the barangay (lowest tier of local government) level. However the City Planning Office is collecting and digitizing data for land use maps.</p><br>
<h2>Water resources and uses in the basin</h2><br>
<p>River discharge measurements taken from 1984 to 1990 indicated an average river flow of approximately 78 cubic meters per second for the period.</p><br>
<p>The main drinking water sources for Davao City are in the neighboring Talomo watershed. These sources are under pressure and the Davao River Basin is likely to be required for water abstraction in the near future.</p><br>
<p>The Environmental Management Bureau samples 8 sites from the confluence of the Tamugan river downstream to the mouth of the river. From the Tamugan River confluence with the Davao River down stream to DDF Subdivision, Mandug the water is classified as Class A – Public Water Supply Class II. Downstream of this point to the sea is classified as Class B or recreational water class I. Analyses for dissolved oxygen over the past 4 years has indicated no significant change in quality. The current monitoring of water quality is insufficient to monitor and evaluate pollution levels and trends in the river.</p><br>
<p>The Bungsberg is the highest point in the north German state of Schleswig-Holstein . It lies in the region known as Holstein Switzerland in the municipality of Schönwalde am Bungsberg between Scheelholz and Mönchsneversdorf.</p><br>
<p>The Bungsberg telecommunications tower is located on the Bungsberg.</p><br>
<p>One of the longest rivers in Schleswig-Holstein, the Schwentine, rises on the Bungsberg.</p><br>
<h2>Formation</h2><br>
<p>The Bungsberg is an ice age terminal moraine. Unusually, though, it was formed in the Saale glaciation period about 150,000 years ago. During the subsequent Weichselian glaciation – only about 10,000 years ago – the ice sheet could not cover the hill due to its height, it could only flow around it, and it therefore formed a nunatak.</p><br>
<h2>Leisure and recreation</h2><br>
<p>Today the Bungsberg is a very popular viewing point, from which the Baltic Sea may be seen in good weather. An observation tower, the Elisabethturm, was built in 1863 and 1864 on the Bungsberg by the Grand Duke of Oldenburg and, after being increased in height by four metres in 1875, is 22 metres high. It is not open to the public today.</p><br>
<p>As a replacement, a viewing platform was installed halfway up the telecommunications tower on the Bungsberg (see below). In April 2007, the facilities for visitors to the Bungsberg looked rather neglected. The inn was largely demolished and completely fenced off. The observation deck was closed due to vandalism. In late May 2007, after two years of restoration, the tower was re-opened to visitors. Those who climbed the 200 steps to the viewing platform had a unique view in clear weather over large parts of Schleswig-Holstein, and beyond to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Later, the platform was closed again.</p><br>
<p>In winter the Bungsberg is Germany&#39;s most northerly skiing area and the only one in Schleswig-Holstein with its own drag lift installed for the few days each year when there is enough snow cover. A downhill run on one of the three pistes lasts about 25 seconds; the lift takes a minute and a half to haul skiers to the top. One piste is for tobogganists and two for skiers or snowboarders. The 300-metre-long downhill piste has a gradient of 17 grad. In the 2009-2010 season up to several hundred people used the slopes daily, some even travelling from Lübeck, Hamburg or Kiel. The 250-metre-long steel cable lift with its 34 zinc pylons can in theory transport up to 600 people an hour to the summit. It was procured in 1970-1971 by the parish of Schönwald am Bungsberg in order to increase tourism. As a result of the weather the lift ran for only one week in 2008-2009 and not at all in 2007-2008. Several years ago snow cannon were employed by an event organiser.</p><br>
<p>In 2013, the Bungsberg Special Purpose Association (Zweckverband Bungsberg) and the Sparkasse Bank Foundation of East Holstein invested in work to increase the attraction of the Bungsberg as a tourist destination for the whole family and as an educational site for schools as part of the East Holsten Education Pass (Bildungsspaß Ostholstein). In 2014 the newly built Waldschänke inn opened so that there is once again a restaurant on the site.</p><br>
<h2>Bungsberg telecommunication tower and NDR transmission mast</h2><br>
<p>Gregory Bald is a mountain in the Great Smoky Mountains. It has an elevation of 4,949 feet  above sea level. The mountain&#39;s majestic summit makes it a popular hiking destination. Another feature that attracts many visitors are the flame azaleas that bloom over the bald every summer. The azaleas reach peak bloom around mid-to-late June.</p><br>
<p>Gregory Bald is located along the Tennessee-North Carolina border, between Blount County and Swain County. It rises appx. 3,000 feet above its northern base in Cades Cove, and appx. 3,300 feet above its southern base at Fontana Lake. The mountain is located entirely within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.</p><br>
<p>Gregory Bald is a type of mountain known as a grassy bald. Unlike most summits in the Appalachians, which are heavily forested or culminate in jagged peaks, grassy balds are covered by a thick layer of wild grass. Trees and other foliage are sparse. How and why a summit develops into a grassy bald is unknown. While there is evidence that Gregory Bald was a natural grassy bald, the National Park Service must currently work to prevent the summit from becoming forested.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>Gregory Bald is composed of a precambrian rock known as Elkmont sandstone. In a few places atop the mountain, sandstone ruts actually erupt through the thick grass. The Elkmont sandstone is part of the Ocoee Supergroup, which was formed from ancient ocean sediments between 500 million and one billion years ago. Gregory Bald, along with most mountains in the area, was formed appx. 200 million years ago during the Appalachian orogeny.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Cherokee name for Gregory Bald was "Tsistu&#39;yi," or "Rabbit Place." According to tribal lore, the chief of all rabbits&mdash; known simply as the Great Rabbit&mdash; lived at the summit. The rabbit, considered by the Cherokee to be sly and mischievous, was a key figure in tribal legends, showing the importance the tribe placed upon the mountain.</p><br>
<p>The mountain was listed by Arnold Guyot in his 1856 survey of the Smokies, although Guyot gave it the name "Great Balds Central Peak", and measured its elevation at 4,922 feet. The name "Gregory Bald" was given to the mountain by Cades Cove residents in honor of Russell Gregory (1795–1864), a prominent Cades Cove settler. He and two other settlers made a deal to each take 1/3 of the land to live upon. Gregory used the mountain to graze cattle during the spring and summer, when the fields in the cove were needed for growing crops. He lived atop the mountain during this part of the year in a circular stone house near the mountains summit (the house is no longer standing). Gregory, who (like most Cades Covers) supported the Union during the American Civil War, was murdered by a Confederate soldier in 1864 while trying to protect his cattle and land. His grave bears the legend "Murdered by North Carolina rebels".</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>The summit of Gregory Bald can be reached via several well-maintained hiking trails. From Cades Cove, the summit can be reached via the Gregory Ridge Trail (5.5 miles). This trail begins at the end of Forge Creek Road, which is a gravel road on the Cades Cove Loop just past the Cable Mill area. From Fontana, the summit is reached via the Appalachian Trail and a two-mile connector trail (7.3 miles). From Twentymile, the summit is reached via the Wolf Ridge Trail (7.3 miles).</p><br>
<p>From the summit, one can see Cades Cove and Rich Mountain to the north, and the Nantahala and Yellow Creek Mountains to the south. Visible to the east is the crest of the Smokies, including Thunderhead Mountain and Clingman&#39;s Dome. Fontana Lake and Shuckstack are discernible to the southeast.</p><br>
<p>Austvågøy or Austvågøya is the northeasternmost of the larger islands in the Lofoten archipelago in Nordland county, Norway. It is located between the Vestfjorden and the Norwegian Sea. The island of Vestvågøya lies to the southwest and the large island of Hinnøya to the northeast.</p><br>
<p>Most of the island is part of Vågan municipality, while the northeastern part belongs to Hadsel municipality. The main town on the island is Svolvær. Austvågøya is popular among mountain climbers. The famous Trollfjord is located in the eastern part of the island. Austvågøy is connected by the European route E10 highway to the neighboring island of Hinnøya in the east using the Raftsund Bridge and to the island of Gimsøya in the west using the Gimsøystraumen Bridge.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The 526.7 km&sup2; island is 40 km long in the east to west direction and 30 km wide from the north to south. The islands surrounding Austvågøya include Gimsøya and Vestvågøya to the west, Skrova, Litlmolla, and Stormolla to the south, Hinnøya to the east, and Hadseløya to the north.</p><br>
<p>Austvågøya is largely a mountain massif, with lowland almost exclusively at the coastal beaches, the brim of lowland around the coast. The highest mountain on the island (and in all of Lofoten) is the 1,146 m tall Higravstinden, located on the eastern part of the island. Svartsundtindan (1,050 m), Trolltindan (1,045 m), and Olsanestind (1,000 m) are also in the eastern part, while the famous Vågakallen (942 m) looms over Henningsvær in the southwestern part.</p><br>
<h2>Name</h2><br>
<p>The Old Norse form of the name was Vágøy. The first element is the name of the old church site at Vågan where Vågan Church is located today. The last element is øy which means "island". The word aust (meaning "east") was later added to the name to differentiate it with the neighboring island of Vestvågøya.</p><br>

<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Designed by Illinois architect Robert Watson, Sherman Hall is a three-story, mixed classical revival-style building. Construction on Sherman Hall began on December 21, 1900 at the cost of $302,950.</p><br>
<p>Sherman Hall opened to the public in 1902 as the main building of Western Illinois State Normal School. Sherman Hall was the school&#39;s only building until Garwood Hall was built in 1914. At the turn of the 20th century, the hall contained classrooms, an auditorium, a gymnasium, a library, laboratories and administrative offices.</p><br>
<p>The building was referred to as the "Main Building" until it was renamed in honor of Lawrence Sherman, an influential Macomb lawyer and speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, in 1956.</p><br>
<p>Sherman Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 as "Western Illinois State Normal School Building." This listing also encompasses nearby Garwood Hall because it is linked to Sherman Hall by a passageway as well as the Western Illinois University Art Gallery because it was the original heating annex for Sherman Hall.</p><br>
<p>East Mountain is a mountain located in Essex County, Vermont, in the "Northeast Kingdom". East Mountain is flanked to the north by Seneca Mountain.</p><br>
<p>East Mountain stands within the watershed of the Connecticut River, which drains into Long Island Sound in Connecticut.</p><br>
<p>The north side of East Mountain drains into Madison Brook, thence into Paul Stream, and the Connecticut River.</p><br>
<p>The southeast side of East Mtn. drains into Stony Brook and Fitch Brook, thence into Granby Stream, and into Paul Stream.</p><br>
<p>The southwest side of East Mtn. drains into the East Branch of the Moose River, and thence into the Passumpsic River, another tributary of the Connecticut.</p><br>
<p>East Mountain is the site of the former USAF North Concord Air Force Station, a ground-based radar facility of the US military. Built in 1955, its name was changed to Lyndonville Air Force Station in 1962; it was closed in 1963.</p><br>
<p>The North Concord AFS reported an unidentified flying object (UFO) sighting in 1961 — a couple hours before the reported abduction of Barney and Betty Hill. The US military sighting lasted 18 minutes.</p><br>
<p>Mount Peale is the highest point in the La Sal Mountains of San Juan County, in the southeastern part of Utah, United States. It is also the highest point in Utah outside the Uinta Mountains. It is located about 20 mi southeast of Moab. The summit is the highest point in the Manti-La Sal National Forest and the Mount Peale Research Natural Area. Mount Peale was named for Albert Peale, a mineralogist on the Hayden Survey of 1875.</p><br>
<p>The La Sal Mountains sit on the arid Colorado Plateau, near such famous desert landmarks as Canyonlands National Park and Arches National Park. However, due to their height, the La Sals are heavily forested and usually snow-capped until early summer (there is one snowfield on the north side that usually lasts year round). Mount Peale can be seen on a clear day from the Wasatch Plateau of central Utah, near Orangeville, over 115 mi away.</p><br>
<p>Mount Peale can be accessed from various directions, but is most commonly climbed from the area of La Sal Pass, 10,125 ft, about 3 mi to the southwest of the peak. La Sal Pass is accessed from the southeast via a graded gravel road. From the pass the summit is obtained by a short but steep off-trail hike of about 2.5 mi with about 2,600 ft of elevation gain. The route often involves some travel on snow, even in summer.</p><br>
<p>Taburno Camposauro is a massif located in the Apennines, to the west of Benevento, in the Campania region of Southern Italy. Its highest peak is the Taburno, at 1,393 m. It is composed of two groups of calcareous mountains separated by a plain. The fauna is affected by human activities, but the birdlife is very diverse. Several historical structures, mainly religious, are located on the massif. A DOC wine is produced in the area.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Romans knew the mountain with the name Taburnus. It lay in the Caudine part of the Samnium, near the location of the famous Battle of the Caudine Forks. The name seems to come from the Oscan language. The mountain was mentioned by Virgil in the Aeneid and in the Georgics, where he described it as "mighty". In his Cynegeticon, Gratius Faliscus described the mountain as "craggy".</p><br>
<p>Bands of brigands used the massif as a refuge and a base for their activities, especially immediately after the unification of Italy.</p><br>
<h2>Geography and geology</h2><br>
<p>Taburno Camposauro is an isolated calcareous massif in the Campanian Apennines whose formation dates back to the Mesozoic. It lacks superficial waters. Karst phenomena including hollows and caves are frequent on the massif. The southern slopes are much steeper and more craggy than the northern ones. Because of the type of clay and the fossil sand found there it is believed that in the mid-Pliocene there was a shallow sea in the area. The oldest limestone rocks in the province are found on the massif. At the foot of the southern group is the Fizzo source, that provides water to the Royal Palace of Caserta via the Aqueduct of Vanvitelli.</p><br>
<p>It is located west of Benevento, and it falls wholly within its province. It is composed of two groups of mountains, the Taburno in the south and the Camposauro in the north, separated by the Prata plain. The Valle Telesina separates the Taburno Camposauro from the Matese mountains, while the densely settled Valle Caudina separates it from the Partenio massif. The highest peaks are: Taburno (1393 m), Camposauro (1390 m), Alto Rotondi (1305 m), Gaudello (1226 m), Sant&#39;Angelo (1189 m), and Pentime (1168 m), which are placed in a semicircle thus shaping the Vitulano Valley in the center.</p><br>
<p>Its territory is shared by fourteen comuni: Bonea, Bucciano, Cautano, Foglianise, Frasso Telesino, Melizzano, Moiano, Montesarchio, Paupisi, SantAgata de Goti, Solopaca, Tocco Caudio, Torrecuso and Vitulano. The tallest peak is in the municipality of Bonea. Seen from Benevento the profile of the mountain resembles a sleeping woman; for this reason it is referred to as “Samnium’s sleeper” (la dormiente del Sannio). The massif is protected as part of the Regional Park of Taburno-Camposauro, which extends for 12,370 hectares, with a total population of about 25,000.</p><br>
<h2>Fauna</h2><br>
<p>The fauna of the massif is varied. Although the pressure from human activities led to the disappearance of rare species from the area, and the lack of water courses limits the variety of species, the Taburno Camposauro hosts the most diverse fauna in the province of Benevento, due to the many different environments. Because of this diversity, bird species are abundant: 94 have been observed, of whom 75 nesting species. The common raven, the common buzzard, the Eurasian nuthatch, redwings and several Passerine species can be seen on the massif.</p><br>
<p>Mammals are affected by human encroachment and extensive road infrastructure. Most common are rodents, bats, European hedgehogs, moles and foxes. The presence of wolves is uncertain: they are thought to pass through the area during their movements, but a stable population has never been observed. Hares and boars found on the massif were originally introduced for hunting reasons.</p><br>
<p>The number of amphibians is affected by the lack of water. The common toad and, more rarely, the European green toad can be found in the gullies, while near the springs at a lower altitude are the Italian tree frog and the Italian stream frog. The presence of two snakes is known, the four-lined snake and the Aesculapian snake, while several smaller reptiles inhabit the massif, among which the Italian wall lizard and the gecko.</p><br>
<h2>Flora</h2><br>
<p>Under 800 metres above sea level, the impact of human activities is strong, and the vegetation is mostly olive trees in the Taburno group and vineyards in the Camposauro group. Between 800 and 1000 metres of elevation the flora is mainly Fraxinus ornus, Carpinus orientalis, Ostrya carpinifolia and field elm. Above 1000 metres of elevation, the trees that dominate the Taburno are the European silver fir and the beech, accompanied by plants such as common holly and belladonna, while the Camposauro has a mixed woodland, with a prevalence of evergreen oak in the northwest and on the peak, and the presence of downy oak and maple on the northern slopes.</p><br>
<p>The European silver firs found on the Taburno were planted by the Bourbons around 1846, and are now part of the State-Owned Forest of Taburno (Foresta demaniale del Taburno), which extends for 614 hectares and hosts mostly beeches.</p><br>
<h2>Landmarks</h2><br>
<p>The ruins of the abbey of Santa Maria in Gruptis are located in the Camposauro group, on the side of a gorge overlooking the Valle Telesina. It was founded in the 10th century and used by several monastic orders, before being deconsecrated in 1705.</p><br>
<p>On the southern slopes of Mount Taburno, in the comune of Bucciano, is the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Taburnus, built at the end of the 15th century and used by Dominican monks. The complex includes a church, a convent, a cloister and a bell-tower. After falling into disrepair, it was slowly restored starting in 1892.</p><br>
<p>In the Taburno group there are the ruins of the Casina Reale, a hunting lodge used by the Bourbon royalty. The rocky southern mountainside hosts several caves, among which is Saint Simeon&#39;s cave, with frescoes dating back to 1600. In the northeastern part of the massif, high above Vitulano, is the Hermitage of Saint Mennas built in the 9th century. On the exact point of the tallest peak of the massif is a large cross with a CAI summit book.</p><br>
<h2>Wine production</h2><br>
<p>Italian wine, both red, white, rose and sparkling, under the Taburno DOC appellation comes from vineyards in the foothills around the mountains in Campania. Grapes destined for DOC production must be harvested up to a maximum yield of 13 tonnes/hectare with the finished wines fermented to a minimum alcohol level of 11%. The Taburno DOC is currently a subzone of the Sannio DOC label.</p><br>
<p>Red and rose Taburno is a blend of 40-50% Sangiovese, 30-40% Aglianico with up to 30% of other grape varieties (both red and white), such as Barbera del Sannio, permitted to fill in the remainder of the blend. The whites are made from 40-50% Trebbiano, 30-40% Falanghina and up to 30% of other local white grape varieties. A sparkling spumante is produced under the Taburno DOC from a minimum 60% blend of Coda di Volpe and/or Falanghina with other local white varieties permitted to fill in up to 40% of the blend. Taburno wines labeled as Riserva must attain a minimum alcohol level of 12% and be aged for at least three years prior to release.</p><br>
